    1. Re: [VACULPEP] Scouts
    2. Unfortunately, Daniel Ross was not an American Revolutionary War Soldier, instead he was on the British side; captured at Yorktown; served under Lord Cornwallis. He was imprisoned there near Falmouth/Richmond area. In 1784, Daniel Ross was released from prison. Next we find him in 1786, marriage record to Jean Lindsey who signed for herself. We could never find what Daniel's occupation was until one day my late husband was reading the Diary of Mr. Slaughter. In Culpeper many years later, Mr. Slaughter's Diary stated Daniel Ross was a tailor as they were friends. The mystery was solved! After this we began looking at other diaries, etc. to find out other information possibly on other ancestors, so paid off, others didn't. Use all the resources you can. 2. Dear Lee, Not sure what Rt. it is on, but its the one which leads to Waylands Mill, at one time was called Waylands Mill Rd, I believe. Yes it is just off the road sitting back in the tree line; there use to be what looked like an old wall and fence there. If this is one and the same place, it would be nice to have volunteers to clean it up. There are not many headstones within, but there are at least 20 - 25 people buried there including Daniel & Jean (Lindsey) Ross as we have a letter stating so. Other people buried with in: Landon Clatterbuck and Nellie Ross; RB (fieldstone found) is for Reeves Bashaw first child of John & Palmyra Estelle (Ross) Bashaw; and I know a few others whose names escapes me. Fourteen years ago, my late husband and I came to Culpeper, just one of the times, and chalked the headstones, then took pictures and documented the headstones, and other places of burial. I wish I could be there to help, but I live in Texas too far away. 1. [VACULPEP] Wharton
    2. Mrs. Lamb released an article in a Culpeper Paper some years ago. She made strong reference to a Wharton Cemetery here. John and I attempted to locate it but were not successful. Mrs. Wharton, wife of Rev War (Sam?) Wharton is buried there. She would qualify for the State restoration program. She was the grandmother of Civil War Gen Gabriel Colvin Wharton. The area we searched was near the railroad and found remains of a very old wooden fence (nice potential). None of the "oldtimers" in the area remembered a cemetery on that property. Suggestions??? 3. You could always do a deed search and see if is mentioned in the earlier deeds of the suspected property. I had to do the same with a family cemetery in Rappahannock County. There was "talk" about a new cell tower being proposed on the property. The State of Virginia does safeguard cemeteries and especially those who have graves of Revolutionary and Civil War veterans. 2. My mother and I faced a very similar problem in Delaware. Because of DE laws regarding graveyards, the developer was forced to protect the graveyard by sectioning it off, provide access to and from, gate the graveyard (wrought iron) and reduce the number of homes they wanted to place on the land. (We put up a headstone identifying the plot.) Doesn't Virginia have laws that protect graveyards? Or perhaps there is a statute concerning archeology that may help. Hard to imagine given Virginia's history that it would not have preservation laws. Celeste ============= In a message dated 9/22/2006 4:45:26 P.M. 3. While interesting, this story highlights an issue of great concern. Nationwide, family burial grounds are being devoured by development. In many instances developers will give family members the opportunity to re-inter remains of ancestors; however, remains are only a small part of the equation. Once familial lands are lost to development the heritage associated with those lands is also lost. It is imperative upon us, as researchers/genealogists to document where we are able before lands are lost. My familes, as well as my husband's families (Gaines, Jenkins, Lillards, Scott, et al) had family burial plots in Culpeper County. Far too many of those plots are now covered with concrete. There is a dire need for state and local authorities to take the lead in preserving family burial plots; the cost of doing so would be far offset by the history preserved. Thanks for sharing this article and best wishes to the family in their quest to preserve their heritage! Culpeper County (among many others) is full of private burial grounds. Genealogists and family historians who are interested in the protection of such sacred grounds will find the storyof imterest. So, perhaps I should have said SOME genealogists will find this story of interest.
