    3. Mitzie, Sounds like Chester's Gap area to me. I have no knowledge of Elzear (Elzey-Ellzey-Elsea?)-Triplett land sale you mention, but I did notice this later 1838 deed sale suggests a possible string of title going back to Hand. I am not sure this is the parcel of land you mentioned in your note, but I will offer this up for your consideration. William Hand had a 400 acre parcel of land granted to him circa 1750 just south of the head springs of the Hedgeman or Rappahannock River. In 1750 this four hundred acre parcel was located just south of Chester's Gap and would have been located where three county borders meet, or the southern boundary of Frederick, the north western boundary of Fauquier and the north eastern boundary of Culpeper. Today this same 400 acre parcel would be located within the present day boundaries of Warren, Fauquier and Rappahannock counties. The Triplett's and Jennings families I believe then had leases in Lord Fairfax's Manor of Leeds starting circa 1780's. I have drawn some of these old grants in Deed Mapper software for this Chester's Gap area and I am happy to export jpeg images to you should you have an interest. 1. Re: [VACULPEP] Isaac Elzear and Wm. Triplett
    2. Jeff Jernegan
    3. Culpeper County was cut off from Orange County, by an act of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1748, effective 1749, when the first county court convened. The original territory included what is now Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock. Madison County was chartered in 1792 (and cut off Culpeper Co). Rappahannock County was formed in the year 1833 from Culpeper County. It's county seat is Washington, Virginia, and the address for the county offices is: Rappahannock County, P.O.Box 517, Washington, VA., 22747-0517. So what was on the Blue Ridge in Culpeper Co in 1828 is probably now in Rappahannock Co. They would have the land records after 1833, Culpeper Co. would have the land records before 1833. So Smith's purchase (and sale?) of that land should be in the Culpeper Co records. They survived well. Start in the Grantee index in 1828 and see if you get lucky... 3. John Frederick Dorman received the Coddington Award of Merit. New England Ancestors Holiday 2006 The award is to recognize the highest standard of excellence in American genealogical scholarship and lifetime achievement in the field. At one time Mr. Dorman lived in Louisville, KY. He later sent letters to my mother (which I still have) as early as 1952 when she was searching for Gabriel Slaughter in VA. (Not the Gov. Slaughter) Mr. Dorman was in Fort Devens, MA and later in Washington DC. I heard a story on people seaching their ancestors that would go in the Filson Club here in Louisville to ask for help and this very young man would come to give advice. They never understood how a person so young was so knowledgeable. As you see I am still on "her quest".

    3. I have a similar case. My Isaac Salisbury was in the Civil war. After the Civil War he came home was not MIA, but very shortly thereafter he went to California to look for gold. He wrote one letter home and said he had arrived in California. The wife, Carolina (Tilford) Salisbury did not hear from him again. About a year later she wrote to the goverment asking for his pension. They sent back a letter asking for all the children's names, births, information about Isaac, letter from people in the town where he was known, (This is all in his military records, that they sent to me when I requested his records.) She received $12 a month. 20 years later she was sent a letter from the goverment that her husband Isaac now living in Montana has applied for his pension and that he will be receiving the check instead of her. I do not know if she ever hear from Isaac. Can you imagine the shock she had that he was still alive. War records are wonderful for infomation. I found this whole family and their names and births. 2. For those of you who are up to date on military rules, laws, etc. [which I am not] I would like to ask the question concerning pensions. If a soldier died and he was MIA during the Civil War period, body was never found, could his wife file for a pension? What would she need to plead her case for a pension? Also, is there records for Civil War MIA? Any help would be greatly appreciated. June [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])

    3. There is a very brave man buried in Culpeper County: James Hugh Goodwin, VMI Class of 1867, buried at home, location unknown We need a photo of the grave. A shot of the area surrounding the grave would be wonderful too. The VMI Corps of Cadets fought as a unit at the Battle of New Market, Virginia, on May 15, 1864. Two hundred fifty seven cadets were on the field. Ten cadets were killed in battle or died later from the effects of their wounds; 45 were wounded. The youngest participating cadet was fifteen; the oldest twenty-five. Two VMI alumni are attempting to obtain photos of the graves and biographical of all 257 cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market in the Civil War. This is a HUGE task. RAoGK has offered to help with the database. You can visit their web page at http://www.augustagavmiaa.info/ and click on the New Market Cadet database. Read about the battle at http://www.vmi.edu/archives/Civil_War/cwnm.html . Hopefully someone on this list has the time to locate and photograph the grave. We welcome any additional biographical information not in the VMI archives or "The Corps Forward" by Couper and Gibson. If in doubt, send what you have and we will compare it. ;-) Please send to me, [email protected] . I will then combine all the data on him and send it to them. They contacted me about my ancestor George Francis Reveley, who was a cadet then, and I volunteered to help them get the other graves photographed, knowing we have so many wonderful people on Rootsweb that will help. ;-) Thanks, Sarah Reveley San Antonio, Texas [email protected]
