    2. Would you be willing to see if there is any info re: John Jones [1755-1838] and William Morris [1722-1792]? They were both from Culpeper and quite active in Charleston WV military adventures of the time. The Kanawha Co DAR is named after Morris. They are both my ancestors. Thanks so much. 1. [VACULPEP] Conway Lineage, Lee, Ball, Washington, etc.
    2. marianne dillow
    3. Cynthia,   I have researched my Conway line more since our last postings. It has taken some time but here is a small part of it. I descend from Edwin Conway, Sr. who married Martha Eltonhead  daughter of Richard Eltonhead and Ann Sutton from England.   I  then descend from their daughter Eltonhead Conway that married Henry Thacker, Sr. They were in Lancaster and Middlesex counties in Virginia.  Eltonhead's brother is Edwin Conway, Jr who married Sarah Fleet daughter of Col. Henry Fleet and second to Elizabeth Thompson.     Then their son is Col. Edwin Conway III who married Anne Ball daughter of Joseph Ball and Elizabeth Romney.  The Conway line plus Alice Eltonhead, that married Henry Corbin, sister to my Martha Eltonhead, leads to this:   James Madison was the Fourth President of the United States. His term was from March 1809 to 1817. He is also the cousin of the 12th president, Zachary Taylor. He connects two ways to President George Washington: Edwin Conway (James' first cousin twice removed) married Ann Ball (half sister) of Mary Ball Washington, Mother of President George Washington. Also: Colonel Francis Thornton III (James' first cousin twice removed) married Francis Gregory, first cousin of President George Washington. Her mother Mildred Washington, is the sister of Augustine Washington. (Georges' Father.)   Also, my grandmother Martha Eltonhead that married Edwin Conway, Sr. sister Alice Eltonhead marreied Henry Corbin which the Lee's of Virginia  descends to  Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, two signers of the Declaration of Independence and Gen. Robert E. Lee among others. I think some of these lines intermarried and moved  on to  Spotsylvania County, and Orange County, etc. such as an example of Rice Curtis married Martha Thacker and their daughter Martha Curtis married Rev. Henry Pendleton, Sr.  to name just one line.   Marianne Dillow

Wednesday, 21st 1850 At 5 P.M. a mob from the upper end of Culpeper & Rappahannock and violently forced the jail and took therefrom the Negro Grayson and carried him to a piece of pines near the Masonic burial ground & there hanged him. Monday, September 16th, 1850 Culpeper Court – busy in the office – on the street but little in the day. Served a notice on Mr. Jno. C. Bynum for my father that he intended mowing his wheat on Smiths land. Attended a fair at night, attended Mifs N… & chatted her all the eve. 3. This is what I found by Googling "1850 Culpeper Co., VA lynching" -   In June, 1850, a free Negro named Grayson, accused of murder, had been twice granted a new trial by the Court of Appeals, and the case was ordered to be heard in Fauquier Co.  But the jail was broken into by a mob and the man - protesting his innocence to the last - was hanged. --- On Thu, 10/16/08, LeeHash@aol.com <LeeHash@aol.com> wrote: From: LeeHash@aol.com <LeeHash@aol.com> Subject: [VACULPEP] Wharton Diary 1850 To: VACULPEP@rootsweb.com Date: Thursday, October 16, 2008, 9:57 AM Found in the Diary of General Gabriel Colvin Wharton when he was Resident Civil Engineer on building the O&A railroad through Culpeper.
