Hi, Anyone researching the Tingler's from the Paint Bank area? I have lots of information to share with others willing to do the same! Would love to connect the Virginia Tingler's with the West Virginia Tingler's! Thanx Cindy Driscoll Roanoke, VA
Hi Lee and Curt, Thanks for the information on the Craig Co. Historical Society. I will get my membership in the mail today. Thanks again. Nancy
Hello, Folks... I recently got some info from microfilm of the 1910 Craig County Census at UVA, printing out some of it. I noticed the name of Ballard Carper signed as enumerator for part of it. I made a scan of the signature, and saved it as a bmp. If anyone should want a copy of this, and can accept attachments to their own personal email, and can handle zipped files, I am happy to send you a copy, if you wish it. Vince
Nancy, If you haven't already sent in your membership, would you request a list of publications the historical society has for sale as Curt Milton asked for. I imagine it will be part of your membership packet. Then you could post it or send it to Curt to post. Thanks. Lee

Yes, I believe it is the same. George Hughs married Margaret <<<the only George marrying a Margaret that I have found is 9Nov1790 in Botetourt to Margaret Johnston>>>>. George's will about 1827 Giles Co. mentions: Nancy; Thomas; David; George; James; Sally; John; Marget; Betsy Polly: Susannah. Marriages I have found are George Hughs to Mary Francisco 25Jan1828 John Hughs to Delila Hacket 11May1833 Susannah Hughs to Andrew Caldwell 19Jan1813 I have not found proof that these marriages where actually the children of George & Margaret Hughs but it looks to be a good possibly. Maybe someone else out there knows something else on this family. Its "Events At Paint Bank, Virginia" Record kept by Wm. H. Hellems and its dates range from 4April1878 to 1912 with a few from 1913 and then one from 1927 when his wife Hester Ann died. Its a very simple diary mentioning things like "Steve Smith's child died" or "Bob Tingler married". Let me know your mothers & her parents name and I will check it for you. I likewise am interested in what resources the Craig Co.Historical Society has for sale! I will gladly post this info at the Craig County Genweb site. I do believe they at least at one time had copies of the census for sale, and I would like to acquire at least the 1860 census. The copy I saw of this at the library had a nice introduction to what Craig was like before and after the war. At one time I was given just a name and phone number for someone to contact related to the society but I dropped the ball and didn't call her. Please post info to this list as it is available, and I will also post it to the genweb site - meetings, holdings, membership info and a list of materials for sale would be great info to have available. Just a note on the GENWEB site. We did lose one of our look-up volunteers so we have some holes in our census lookups. I am almost up to date on queries (i have one to post) and still behind on surnames (i am thinking about merging the surname page with the page that lists information of our earliest individuals). I have also been encouraged by some messages from folk researching TAYLOR and FISHER that I am working on going through my info for. Good to see a lot of traffic on this mailing list and folk who are sharing from their own treasury of family history. I was almost going to inquire today if there was any intention of replacing the abstracts with the real thing! This is good news. Hey! Whatcha got against poetry? Steve, Thanks for the information. I will check it out. Nancy
This is a most marvelous book. It is crammed with detail. Guaranteed hours of peering into the book will not be wasted. It costs $15 p/b. I visited the Craig Historical Society, though I cannot tell you the directions of how to get there. Someone on the list can give you directions. My contact was Grace D. Eakins. Grace describes her. Vince
Hi Steve, I saw your answer to Vince, and I was wondering if the Craig Co.Historical Society has any other books on obits or for that matter any information on the time period of 1850-1870. (I know that is a dumb question). I am looking for information on an Isaac SCOTT who was a Dr. in 1860 according to the Census and Tax records and lived in what was called the Potts Creek Valley in Criag Co. I would also like some information about the Criag Co Historical Society; ie; cost, who to write to join, ect. Any help that you could give me in regard to this would be greatly appreicated. Nancy Scott
Vince, I have nothing against Poetry it's just that some of these obits are so long it's not funny. so rather than abstract them I figured the poem should go, however not all have gone, you'll see. I think this one is very interesting reading. Steve
I'm interested in "Events at Paint Bank". My mother was born there. Could you tell me a little more about it?
Vince, Abstracts is a very good book, however the obits are just that abstracted. in the one that I am doing I do not omit anyting except for a poem somethimes at the end of an obit if it takes a lot of room. Steve
Nancy at this moment I can not really tell you that much about the Craig County Historical Society other than it is located in the Old Brick Hotel in New Castle. I don't think they have any obits back that far, but they do have a book called Abstracts which were collected by Rossie Givens Pendleton over a number of years. I really am sorry that I can's give you a better address. you can check the Craig Co site at Genweb. Steve
I am interested in the George and Mary Hughs family mentioned here. I believe this is Mary Francisco who married George Hues (Hughs) 19 Feb 1828 in Botetourt Co. I have Francisco information. Man! This really licks the icing out of the bowl! What a lot of info for me to type in. I love it! Great. I really appreciate this. Figured I'd drop a few names and see if any new people out there may also be researching them. What I know is: In Giles County on 11May1833 John Hughs married Delila Hacket (daughter of John Hacket). I believe John Hughs to be the son mentioned in the will of George Hughs (wife was Margaret) but can not prove it. In Giles County on 29Sept1821 James Smith married Elizabeth Lugar (daughter of Adam Lugar). Looking for the parents of James Smith. Any help is greatly appreciated. Sandy
Vince, couldn't find anything on Ferrel's or Ruble's in "Events At Paint Bank". But saw your other note on Mary V. Hughes & Sidney Hughes and that rang a bell. I am researching Hughs in Craig so I dug through my file and found: George & Mary Hughs had 7 children that I know of: Martha b. abt. 1828 (married a Clamp I believe); John 1832; Christopher 1836; Lewis 1838; Sidney 1843; Mary V. 1844; Sarah J. 1845 (married a John Givens). They are listed in all the Craig County census' but in 1870 the last name is spelled Huse. Lillian is a name that I have found in my Martha Hughes & Jacob Myers' family. The daughter was Delila Clemetine and often went by Lillian or Lillie and she was born 15June1876 in Craig Co. The best I have put together on the Hughs line is George & Margaret Hughs had 10 children and George died 1827 listing all of them. George Hughs was one son and John Hughs was another. I believe John Hughs is the same John Hughs who married Delila Hacket in 1833 in Giles. John & Delila Hughs had at least 6 children the oldest Martha and the youngest Delila Clemetine. The oldest daughter Martha is the one that married Jacob Myers and had Lillie very close to the date you have but my Lillie would have to have been a Myers not a Hughs. I have not been able to connect for sure my John Hughs as the son of George & Margaret Hughs but I keep searching. Not sure any of this helps but maybe someone else out there can add to this and give you some results. Good luck. Sandy
