    1. [VACRAIG-L] 1890 Census Records
    2. Glenn Belcher
    3. We really do need the 1890 Census, however, this was burned in 1921. At the time, the census schedules were located in the basement of the Commerce Building in Washington, D. C. Even though the fire was contained, it flooded the area. The damage was not assessed until the following day, and it was noted that the census records soaked in the water overnight outside the protected vault area. The schedules were dried out, re-copied. But it was impossible to restore them. So? They should still be intact, yes? In 1932 Congress authorized certain documents to be destroyed, which included the original 1890 schedules. Then, in 1934, the remaining schedules were destroyed by the Department of Commerce. Some of the mid-western census records are still available. For example, the 1890 Illinois schedules were later found, and again in 1953, when some fragmented schedules were discovered. Family History Centers have microfilmed these fragmented schedules which consist mostly of mid-western states, and then, not all counties, or enumeration districts are in tact. Jeannette H. 3. Queries were recently submitted to the Craig County Genweb site on the following surnames: BRIZENDINE, HUMPHREYS, HUBBARD, SCOTT, BOLTON and RAINES. Please review these if you haven't visited for a while. I know traffic is often slow - we don't need a traffic light at all. Are there any traffic lights in Craig County by the way? Please note the various types of pages at the site and submit information as appropriate. Take care and Happy New Year. Curt http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/4294/craig.html

    1. [VACRAIG-L] Beckner family
    2. Hello fellow Craig County researchers, I have just joined the mailing list and want to introduce myself and the lines I am working on in Craig County. My great grandmother Virginia Ann BECKNER was born in Craig Co. VA in 1849 to Matthew and Elizabeth (CALDWELL) BECKNER. She moved to Monroe Co. WV where she married then eventually ended up in Arkansas where she died. Her mother Elizabeth Caldwell Beckner died in Craig County in 1857 and Matthew married again Belinda/Malinda WEBB. Matthew and Belinda had three children and it is these children I am having trouble finding info about. They were: William Beckner born abt. 1862-married Alice "Babe" Huffman. Died? Children?? Belinda Ellen born 25 Apr 1864-married John Henley 22 Sep 1930. Died? Children: William M. born 15 Sep 1885 in Craig Co.-Father ?? Louis born in 1902 in Craig Co.-Father ?? Amanda M born in 1866-married Wilbur Crawford. Died in 1953. Children?? If anyone has any info on this family I would appreciate swapping info. I have lots on Matthew Beckner's parents, (His mother was a DUNCAN) grandparents etc. back several generations and some on Elizabeth Caldwell's parents (her mother was a SMITH) and grandparents. I am more than willing to share. Thank you and Happy New Year to all. Melinda Roles Jacquier in Long Beach, CA

    1. [VACRAIG-L] New Castle Sheriff's
    2. Hi All, I don't know the dates, but do know that my Great Grandmother's brother was a Sheriff in New Castle. His name was Oscar Miller Martin. Oscar was b. on 12-3-1877, Craig Co., VA, to Thomas Benton "Bent" Martin and Mary Jane Elmore. Oscar died on 6-27-1912 in a Roanoke, VA hospital. He married Emma Harriet Craft on 12-24-1905 in Craig Co., and they are buried in the Westview Cem., in New Castle. Uncle Oscar was to arrest a Mr. Harve Looney one day. Mr. Looney didn't want to be arrested and decided that he wanted to shoot Uncle Oscar instead. Which he did, and Oscar died a few days later in the hospital. So, I know he was a Sheriff in 1912, but when he came to that position I do not know. Cindy Driscoll Roanoke, VA

They can give dates, names, association of more than one name in a business, who lived in the neighborhood, a widow, and hence an outside death date for the husband. 3. Does anyone know of any history here, in connection with the "Railway Express"? Apparently it was not truly the railroad, but was tied in with the railway. Howard Burns Carper, Sr. of Craig County worked there, but had to move to Charlottesville, VA, due to a transfer. I would like to know something about the outfit. Vince
