    1. [VACRAIG] BOWEN and the Welsh
    2. Vincent E. Summers
    3. Bob and others... Here is an interesting BOWEN, and a slight history of the origin of the name, which you are likely already aware of... from Erik Conard of my Original 13 Settlers of Germantown PA group.... Amy Abigail Metcalf Bowen was the wife of Col. Albert Bowen. Amy was a nurse in China during pre-WWI, read, spoke and wrote Chinese. Very talented woman. Col. Bowen was of Welsh ancestry. The name Bowen was from "ab Owen" and through assimilation became Bowen. "ap" and "ab" meant son of in their patronymic naming system, e.g. ap Howell=Powell ap Richard=Pritchard, ap Rhys=Price, etc. along with another system of adding an "S" to indicate the father's name now used as a surname for the son, such as Hugh=Hughes, John=Jones Robert=Roberts. Thought you might like this info. Also, if by any odd chance you are kin to this Bowen, or would like further information, you can write to Erik at Econard1@aol.com Vince

    2. Bob, Well, just as a point of note, "the" William Preston (bc 1727/29, Ireland; dc 1783, VA) obviously didn't sign Rachel Mills' marriage consent but it's very likely that the William Preston who did was his son. Just so you know. Bob P.S. Has anyone tried to research the descendants of any of Moses Bowen's brothers in PA? Might be a good idea if anyone would have their names

    1. [VACRAIG] Bowens in PA & OH
    2. bob bowen
    3. Howdy Craigers: I'm not familiar with the John and Rachel "Feurt" Bowen of PA & OH. Could be they are part of the Moses Bowen family that started in PA in the early 1700's. Some of that family moved into Augusta Co., VA, then into Botetourt, Tazewell and Washington Counties. I have found no connection, however, between that Bowen line and my Bowen line (John & Elizabeth of Craig Creek, etc.). It is strange that a search for a John and Rachel Bowen has surfaced at the same time I posted a query for a John and Rachel on the Montgomery County website. My John is a son of old John & Elizabeth. He was born about 1778. He married Rachel Mills in Montgomery County. Their marriage bond is dated August 3, 1803. William Preston signed the bond as Rachel's guardian. And, what you've just read is all I know about my John & Rachel. Can anyone help with my mystery? 3. Oddly enough, the very day after I post some BOW(e)N photos on my page for Bob Bowen, I get this email on the Philly group! --------- Subject: [PADAUPHI-L] BOWEN Resent-Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 22:00:28 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: PADAUPHI-L@rootsweb.com Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 00:44:28 -0500 From: Carolyn <mcguire@greenapple.com> To: PADAUPHI-L@rootsweb.com Hi all I recently joined a few PA lists so if you receive duplicates of this message, I apoligize. I'm searching for information on a John BOWEN, b. 1786, d 1845 married Rachel FEURT in 1815 and had at least the following four sons: Gabriel, Daniel, Thomas & James. I have been told that John was born PA but I have not been able to confirm that. Confirming his place of birth is my primary goal right now. Finding his parents would be a wonderful bonus! I've been searching for old John for a few years now and he appears to be my brick wall. He and Rachel were married in Scioto County, OH. John is burried in the Bowen cemetery at Vales Mill (Vinton County, OH) as are many descendents. If anyone has any information on this lost family of Bowen's, it would be greatly appreciated. We have a ton of information on John and Rachel's descendents, but nothing prior to them. Thanks for your help. 2. Vincent Edward Summers
    3. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/3270/ I put up the Bown/Bowen photos for Bob Bowen. If anyone has any other images they would like to have put up, let me know. Also, I have changed my mind on a matter. I have decided that I will accept photos of the cemeteries themselves, and not just the individual stones, but only if they are small, family cemeteries, not easy to spot. If there are errors, please let me know. Vince Summers

    3. Folks: Does anyone have more details on this link? I am not quite sure it exists yet, but it seems almost certain it does... Benjamin Carper + Phebe Leffel ---> Martha J. Carper (among others) Martha J. Carper married a Givens, and had issue: Dr. Robt. Givens. Robert Givens married daughter of Sabina Payne... Paynes crossed Davis line in Bath County! This represents the juncture, in the past, of my wife's mother's Carper lines, and her father's Davis lines... Thanks, Vince

The following are 3 major names I work on: HUMPHREYS, SMITH, BRIZENDINE. I have a site with only the direct lines given, please let me know if you know or are a party to my families. 1. [VACRAIG] The Family von Nida
    2. R.J.NIDA
    3. Perhaps you purchased or have heard about our family history book, The Family von Nida, From Germany to America 1262-1998, that I published in the spring of this year. It contained over 10,000 related family members, fully indexed with many pictures, and a history of the areas where our ancestors lived. That 858 page book was well received and sold out within one month. Additional information was sent to me by family members who wanted to update their line. This data was added to my 22,000 Nida/Niday/Nidy family database. Additional requests for copies of the book has prompted the issue of a second printing which is now ready for shipment. This issue contains all of the first printing and is 29% larger with some fifty additional pictures, and contains 1,107 pages. Additional information includes cause of death and burial information when known,. Our family crest is now imprinted in gold on the front cover. What a wonderful Christmas present this will be and it will last for a lifetime. The supply of these books is limited at a pre-publication price of $60. postpaid. If you are interested in the origin of our family, please contact me at the address above before 01 Jan 2000 for this special price. To learn more about this publication, check my home page at http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/n/i/d/R-J-Nida-GA/ Jack Nida

    3. That is exactly what I will do. Bob has given the OK, I believe... At least informally... Hope you are doing fine. My appeal goes out to the group again, to send directions to any known cemetery in Craig County, with the appropriate naming of the cemetery, or at least the oldest and/or major name present in the cemetery, as well as the info as to whether permission is needed to enter that land. I love to receive images by email attachment. It is my preferred means, but if necessary, snail mail of photos is acceptable as long as one knows I will try my best to take care of them and return them, but can guarantee nothing more. Extremely rare photos, please do not send. Copies where possible. Vince > > Vince Where are you. There are Photos here Please say yes. that you can put > them at your site for BOB. As far as the referenced photos are concerned, if you want copies, send me a separate message and I'll send them to you as an attachment to my reply. Hi: Just back from a quick visit to the Bowen Cemetery on Rt. 621 in Craig County. Would be interested in talking with the person who recorded this cemetery (it's posted on the Craig County web site) because there are some additions that need to be made to the list. Also, Mr. & Mrs. Joyce who now own the land on which the cemetery rests, says that at some time in the early 1900's, an orphanage was located on the property. Do any of you have any information about this orphanage? The land in question was in the Bowen family from 1788 to at least 1905 (John Bowen to son, James Bowen to son James L. Bowen). John and his wife Elizabeth are believed to be buried in the cemetery. James Bowen assumed ownership upon the death of his parents per an 1823 agreement on file in Montgomery County. James' estate was settled in 1866. He is believed to be the J. Bown who died in August 1865. His grave is marked with an inscribed field stone. His son, James L. (blind mattress maker) is shown living in the house in the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census for Craig County. He is the "J. L. BOWAN, DEC AUG 15, 1905 AGD. 78 YS" buried in the cemetery. I'm attaching three photos to this message. (1) the cemetery, (2) J. Bown's marker & (3), J. L. Bowan's marker. Semper Fi - Bob Bowen in Woodbridge, VA -- Protect our Flag
