He married ELIZABETH SHRIDER 1769 in Probably Maryland, daughter of HENRY SHRIDER and ELIZABETH. She was born Abt. 1750 in Botetourt, VA, and died Abt. 1835 in Fincastle, Botetourt, Virginia. Notes for NICHOLAS CARPER: >From GOODE2SHUS@aol.com: >From "Early Marriages, Wills and Some Revolutionary War Records of Botetourt County, Virginia" by Anne Worrell: Nicholas Carper, will probate May 1813. Names wife, Elizabeth, and children Jacob, Benjamin, Elizabeth Harvey, Mary McFarran, Joseph, Sally, Holstine, and Isaac. Note: The names Harvey and McFarran are married names. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Peggy A. Grubbs book on the Carpers: Revolutionary War, buried at Presbyterian Church, Fincastle. ---------- I ascribe this information to this Nicholas Carper, since his father, Nicholas, was not in Virginia, and this Nicholas had many children, but quite possibly none were 16 in 1787. Also, he died in Botetourt. So... In the 1787 Census of Virginia for Botetourt County, p. 223 - Carper, Nicholas (paid his own tax). He had horses and cows, but no males between 16 & 21. ---------- Moved about 1778 to Fincastle, Virginia, where he died in 1813, survived by his wife Elizabeth and 8 children. He was an elder of the Fincastle Presbyterian church, and represented Botetourt County in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1802 and 1803; was a large landholder, and a slaveholder. Buried at Fincastle Church. AFN:H9GO-QC ----------- Vince, My source of will info of Nicholas Carper was contained in OVER THE MOUNTAIN MEN, by Anne Lowry Worrell in 1934 which gives a probate date of May 1813 in Botetourt Co. Names wife, Elizabeth; and ch Jacob; Benjamin; Elizabeth Harvey; Mary M'ferran; Joseph; Sally Holestine; and Isaac. >From this info, I would conclude that Elizabeth Harvey was the married child of Nicholas and Elizabeth Carper so your info that his wife was a Shrider could well be correct. Someone may have misread the will thus creating Elizabeth Harvey as Nicholas' wife. His dau, Elizabeth, married James Harvey 21 Jul 1790 in Botetourt Co. NICOLAUS1 COERPER was born Abt. 1703 in Baden Germany, and died Aft. 1790 in Lancaster, PA. He married ANNA MARGARETHA BARBARA MARSTELLER December 03, 1734 in New Providence Twp, Montgomery, Pennsylvania. The first version of the list, written by the captain or one of the ship's officers, includes women and children, non of whom have a surname similar to Nicholas'. There were 106 men (age 16 and older), 89 women and 84 children on board, for a total of 279 passengers, all of whom are noted to be Palatines. In the second and third versions of the list for this ship, which is made up of the adult male passengers' signatures, your ancestor signed his own name as Niklas KORPER (umlaut over the O) and Niklas KERPER, respectively. He was Niklas Korper on the signature list on the ship, Niklas Kerper on Clerk of Court's list when passengers took oath of allegiance to King of England and American Colonies (called 'Declaration of FIdelity and Abjuration'), and he was Nicholas Corber on the ship captain's list. - Margery Ellis. >From Egle's Notes & Queries: Baptismal Record of Rev. My immigrant Carper was Nicholas Kerber in Germany and Nicholas Carper (1703 - ~ 1758) in USA in Pennsylvania. Actually he is my ancestor twice. I have a chance to do just a little more for now. Then on to playing a computer game with my daughter! I have: Jacob Carper b. bet. 1775-1776 d. 1827 m. January 26, 1796 Botetourt Co., VA Sarah Raymer b. 1775 d. 1838 One of the Issue I have is Nicholas. Now, all the issue I have listed under Sarah are born from 1797 to 1823. Not impossible, but a bit surprising, possibly. Someone (sadly I do not remember who!) sent me a file with a lot of family members of this Nicholas b. 1799. They have him marrying a Sarah Nida(y) the y being added by a different researcher, and I have also him marrying a Lydia Smith. Now the troublesome part is that they list Nicholas as having a different father (mother unlisted) -- Alkanah Washington Carper. Now I gather that the data comes from the Peggy Grubb book, Carpers of Roane, etc. Now, I believe it is well-stocked with documentation, but I also believe she messed up on Elizabeth Harvey instead of Elizabeth Shrider, or just Elizabeth, surname unknown... So I am not so certain I buy Alkanah Washington Carper either. Yet, as I said, I am not dismissing it. The same source lists an entire line of Alkanah Carper descendants (the daughter of Nicholas, supposedly named after his mother). Could the so-called Alkanah, the mother of Nicholas, who supposedly lived in the household of Nicholas at one point, have been, not a mother, but an Aunt, etc? Any input to help straighten all this out? Thanks, Vince
Don't forget.... Alkanah could also be spelled Elkanah --jsl ----- Original Message ----- From: Vincent Edward Summers <vsummers@nrao.edu> To: <VACRAIG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 25, 2000 1:01 PM Subject: [VACRAIG] CARPERs! I have received several CARPER printouts from both Genforum, and from members of this group. Just oodles of stuff. Later, when the weather settles down, I intend to post it all in generations. I will desire any help possible in correcting errors, and adding source. Believe me, the additional material is voluminous! It is disturbing because it rocks the boat, and because it makes sense. To a point. Vince, My source of will info of Nicholas Carper was contained in OVER THE MOUNTAIN MEN, by Anne Lowry Worrell in 1934 which gives a probate date of May 1813 in Botetourt Co. Madge Looney Crane may be reached at R.R. 1, Box 193, Waterford, OH 45786. She has an e-mail address but I do not know it. Hope this is helpful. Vince, The will of Nicholas Carper names only his wife, Elizabeth, and some children, no maiden name for her. Madge Looney Crane has done some research on the Carper family and may know more about his marriage than an approx. date of 1770. Hot dogs, I think you've found it out. Of course, I will examine it a little more closely, but I think you've broken into the truth on this one. Thank you.
