There have been requests for handouts, etc from the genealogy panel discussion. I do not believe that can be possible. However, we can tape it and have that video available on our website as soon as we can. We can also "Facebook live" it from our facebook page. If possible I recommend that if you want to be a part of it, that you like the Bedford Museum and Genealogical Library's Facebook page and we can add as many questions as we can as we go along. -- Thank you, Jennifer Thomson Genealogical Librarian Children's Educational Director Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library 201 E. On Saturday November 12th, at 1:30 PM, the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library is proud to host Jim Belcher as he shares the story of his family's experience during World War II, as a child of a Navy Chief Petty Officer and Japanese mother. He authored his father’s chapter in the book, “Only 317 Survived!” and authored several magazine and newspaper articles about his father’s specific ordeal on the USS Indianapolis and his life in general. He will also share his mother’s story of survival during and after WWII along with his father’s, giving a unique two-sided view of WWII. His Japanese grandfather was a victim of the second atomic bomb drop at Nagasaki, and his uncle served in the Imperial Japanese Army from 1938-1945. His mother’s recollections of the war bring many insights and explanations of Japanese perspective to our history lessons. Jim continues to keep his promise to his father and mother…to take care of his father’s shipmates until the last man, and preserve their unique story among the many stories of the USS Indianapolis CA-35. The program will be on the third floor of the Bedford Museum and is free to the public. "Trying to describe Montvale Native and Moneta resident Rodney Franklin is like trying to stuff the Pacific Ocean into a teacup. If you call him a plumber's helper, you're on the mark. He once was. If you call him a sailor, again, you're right. You'd also be correct if you refer to him an an airman (his 21 years of active military service spans both the Korean and Vietnam wars), high school teacher, Moose Lodge administrator, babysitter, or writer. No, he is not superman, and he is not 130 years old. He is however, a youthful octogenarian who still beats golf balls and on the guitar. Rodney will reflect on his life and look ahead on Saturday July 9th at 1:30 PM at the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library. At times, he is blunt, at times tactful, but always speaks of his love for America and the opportunities we have that many other countries don't have. He is first, last and always a patriot. His philosophy is you're not beaten until you give up. He says "Each day's sunrise is a blessing, each sunset another." The presentation will be on the third floor of the Museum and there is an elevator and plenty of parking available. "In Dick Bidwell’s fairly long and occasionally interesting life, one event stands out even after 70 years. It is the nuclear bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean in 1946, Operation Crossroads. On Saturday May 14, he will give a little insight about it and where he fit in. Mr. Bidwell grew up in Florida, and at the age of 17 World War II required his presence in a service. He enlisted in the Navy in early 1945 and was in electronic tech school when the war ended in September, 1945. At graduation he was assigned to a ship in the support and observer fleet at Bikini, the USS Panamint. After getting out of the Navy he attended Washington & Lee University. After a detour for the Korean War, in 1956 he joined the CIA and it became his career. It was a life with many interesting, and hopeful useful things. After retirement Mr. Bidwell moved to Bedford County (Smith Mountain Lake) and eventually to Roanoke, with his adored wife of 50+ years, Susan. The events that occurred at Bikini are still vivid in Mr. Bidwell’s mind after 70 tears, and he feels lucky to have been able to take part in the operation, even if on a very small scale. The presentation will be on the third floor of the Bedford Museum and Genealogical Library and there is plenty of parking and an elevator available. The free presentation will start at 1:30PM. Please contact the Museum with any questions." -- Thank you, Jennifer Thomson Genealogical Librarian Children's Educational Director Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library 201 E. "Between December 17 and 19, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge there were hundreds of American POW's that were lined up and murdered. The majority of the causalities were on December 17 near the town of Malmedy, which is how the tragedy came to be called the Malmedy Massacre. There were around 40 survivors, one of those was Bedford County native Bill Merriken, stationed with the 285th Field Artillery Battalion. On Saturday February 13, his daughter, Jan Roberts will be sharing his incredible story of survival, including a video that he made explaining the ordeal.
