Ann ___. 11 children. I come from Plunkett's son John F. m. Henrietta Smith. Plunkett is s/o of Plunkett Harroway Holt b 1689 Va d. abt 1767 Amelia Co Va Plunkett Harroway Holt is s/o Richard Holt b. abt 1628 in Rochdale England, arrived in St Mary's Co Md in 1646 with his parents, Robert Holt and Dorothy Heyward Holt. He was one of four siblings. Robert and Dorothy soon began to have problems with thier marriage. Eventually Dorothy was charged with adultery and banished from the colony after a whipping ordered. That was commuted and she was told she could return to her husband (after she had been told she must stay way for a period of time -she had threatened verbally to kill him in public). Eventually Dorothy and her lover, Edward Hudson and Dorothy remained together, with Dorothy having two children with Edward. Shortly thereafter, Robert had the first Anglican minister, who also was clerk of court draw up papers disolving his marriage with Dorothy, and married Christian Boniwell. Well, this was not exactly legal. In fact, both Robert and the Minister (William Wilkinson) were charged with Bigamy. Robert was convicted and William fined. Robert was basically sentenced to death, but commuted with the over throwal of Cromwell. (I know this sound strange, but honest, it's documented in maryland archives and in "Crime and Punishment in Early Maryland". Soon after, Robert died (as well as the minister), before they could be tried again as Christian and Robert continued living together as man and wife. On Robert's death, David, brother of Richard and son of Robert and Dorothy tried to dispossess Christian of her home, claiming his father's estate as oldest son. Another court case ensued. Christian prevailed as Robert had left a will and she was able to prove what she had brought into the marriage (maryland was much more progressive under Lord Calvert than Virginia was under the King). soon Dorothy married Edward Hudson and moved to VA where Richard was already situated. I 've never understood why Richard is found with Dorothy and Edward, as she had verbally threatened both Robert the father, and Richard her son, stating "she hoped they rotted limb from limb" etc. (domestic violence at it's best) For all that, they were together later in VA, along with the two sisters and the two children of Edward Hudson. Richard seems to have made his own way, although I don't think he was a man of much wealth, which I believe his father had been. If Robert Holt, a cooper, wasn't a wealthy man, his wife came from a well do to group. They had paid their own passage to MD and had land ownd, free and clear. They had to have paid their way out of some of the trouble in MD, especially Dorothy. It's an interesting group. I can send you the rest of the holt line that I have if you want it. You need to order the book "I wrote you word" about John Lee Holt as it has the story of Marcellus and his brothers in it and some of the genealogy of that family in it.
