Sarah B. SMITH, second child of Mary THACKSTON and Pemberton SMITH, was born ca 1805 in Prince Edward Co., Va. She md William B. PURCELL 19 Dec 1833 in P E. William was born ca 1806 in P E. For a few years after their marriage, Sarah and William lived in Cumberland Co., Virginia, where two of their children were born. In 1839, "William Percil" of Cumberland County purchased 301 1/2 acres on "horsepen creek" in Charlotte County, bounded by the lands of Coleman Lipscomb, James Eudailey, Presley Arnold, Claiborne Clements, James McCarg, and Thomas Roberts. We last have Sarah and William in the 1880 census of Charlotte County, at which time they were living with their son John. They had four known children: 1) Mary E. PURCELL - born ca 1835 in PE, md. Joseph E. MARABLE in 1854 in Charlotte Co.; 2) Sarah C. PURCELL - born ca 1837 in Cumberland Co.; 3) John P. PURCELL - born ca 1839, md. Rubia A. MOSS 1867 in Charlotte Co., died after 1922, had children Mary B. PURCELL, who md W. T. GREGORY, John B. PURCELL, Annie B. PURCELL, who md Charles M. BROOKS, William V. PURCELL, and Pearle PURCELL; 4) Ann M. S. "Nannie" PURCELL - born ca 1843, md. William T. SPENCER in 1861 in Charlotte Co., had at least children William H., Luther R., Edward T., and Lelia.
