One of the Charlotte Co. families I'm researching descends from Frances THACKSTON, born ca 1750s, and involves the following surnames: ADAMS, BRIGHTWELL, DICKERSON, DODSON, GLENN, HINES, IRVINE, JONES, JOURNEY, LAYNE, MEADOWS, NEWELL, NORTH, POLLARD, and WATKINS. Any help appreciated. Frances THACKSTON (ca 1750s-aft 1824), married John NORTH in the 1770s and, after his death, James DODSON in 1786. They lived in Prince Edward Co., Va., but relocated to Charlotte Co. about 1818. We last have them in an 1824 Charlotte Co. land deed. Frances' children: 1. James NORTH, born late 1770s, no further information 2. Frances W. NORTH, born ca 1785, md. John W. HINES, died by 1848, had at least 9 children, including: Jemima W. HINES, born ca 1800-10, who md. John ADAMS in 1834; Maria N. HINES, born ca 1815, md. Edward J. DICKERSON 1837; John S. HINES, born ca 1810s, md. Nancy POLLARD, may have moved to N.C.; Frances E. HINES, born ca 1810s, md. Doctor J. DICKERSON 1836; James J. HINES, born ca 1810s; Lucy A. HINES, born ca 1816-19, md. John D. GLENN 1838; Mary J. HINES, born ca 1820s, md. Jerry D. MEADOWS 1847. 3. Dorotha "Dolly" NORTH, born ca late 1780s, md. Henry JONES in Prince Edward Co. in 1805. We last have them in an 1814 Prince Edward deed. 4. Mary "Polly" NORTH, born ca 1780s, md. William JOURNEY in Prince Edward in 1806. No further information. 5. Rhoda DODSON, born ca 1795, md. Jesse BRIGHTWELL in Prince Edward in 1811, lived in Charlotte County. Jesse apparently died 1850-60; we last have Rhoda in the 1860 census. Children included: Daughters born 1820-25 and 1825-30, son born 1820-25; William D. BRIGHTWELL, born ca 1832; Julia A. BRIGHTWELL, born ca 1834; Charles A. BRIGHTWELL, born ca 1836, md. Margaret A. LAYNE 1858, died 1890 Charlotte Co. 6. Sally DODSON, born ca 1786-94, md. James BRIGHTWELL in Prince Edward in 1812. They apparently did not remain in P E or Charlotte Co., but we have not located where they went. 7. Susan Wimbish DODSON, born ca 1798, md. William B. NEWELL in Charlotte Co. in 1819. William apparently died 1840-50; we last have Susan in the 1860 census of Charlotte Co. Children included: Elizabeth NEWELL, born ca 1822, md. Powhatan J. IRVINE 1850; James William NEWELL, born ca 1828; Frances "Fannie" J. NEWELL, born ca 1832; John W. NEWELL, born ca 1835; Susan NEWELL, born ca 1838. 8. John J. DODSON, born ca 1794-1802, md. Jane WATKINS in Charlotte Co. in 1823. The following year, he purchased his parents' land in Charlotte Co., but we have no further info. --Karra Porter--
