I tried to access this in the Charlotte archives after being notified and was not able to do so Jo Lee wrote that she had been trying to find his wifes name. I found the marriage record in Amelia co Va. mg records which I ordered in from the FHC here in Denver. He married Mary Robertson. I am very interested in this man. He md several of James Spencers children James Spencer died leaving a will in charlotte co. mentioning his wife Eleanor (thought to be a Robertson) and his eldest son John Spencer (my line) who is believed to have md the daughter of James Fletcher of the 1782 Charlotte census. James Fletcher wound up in Wilkes co N.C. John Spencer and a son of John Weatherford wound up in Surry co N.C. I need that death date and any other Weatherford marriages that were mentioned in that bible will share any information on the above families Will someone please help me with this I will be very grateful Fran Fletcher fmfco@aol.com
Devareaux Jarrett was more than a minister. He was initially hired, per his journal, as a teacher for Jacob Moon's children in Albemarle Co Va in the 1750's before Jacob up and moved to Bedford. He was appalled at the condition of the "church" in Albemarle co and the lack of attendance and participation. Little did he know that most of those running Albemarle at that point had moved to get away from "the church" and weren't about to create a good system as had existed in New Kent etc. A good number of them were "closet" quakers or other dissenters. they show up as vestrymen in earlier times and Quakers later, but came from Irish Quaker families. It may be more likely that your ancestor was named for Devereux Jarratt. Jarratt was a prominent man in his time. Here is a quote from "Charlotte County, Rich Indeed," c. 1979, Charlotte County Board of Supervisors, pages 160-161: "In the 1760's, the Established Church of England was still quite strong in Virginia, but in the 1770's, a movement within that church towards Methodism had begun. In those days, a man had to travel to England to be ordained in the Anglican Church because no bishop resided in America. A young Virginian, Devereux Jarratt, had made such a trip in 1762-63, and upon returning to his native colony, he began immediately to preach." "Reverend Robert Williams is credited with founding Methodism in Virginia...The entire year of 1773 was spent by Mr. Williams in preaching and forming societies in "that section of the state south of Petersburg." He came to Jarratt's house and remained one week of that year, preaching several times in his parish....For the next ten years, Jarratt heartily supported the Methodist preachers. From 1776 to 1783, the boundaries of Jarratt's labors included five counties in North Carolina and Brunswick, Greensville, Southampton, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Bedford, Prince Edward, Nottoway, Amelia, Cumberland, Powhatan, Chesterfield, Henrico, Caroline, King and Queen, King William, New Kent, James City, Charles City, Surry and Sussex in Virginia. He averaged five sermons each week." "The total number of Methodist in America in 1777 was 6,968. Of this number, the region which had been influenced by Devereux Jarratt boasted two-thirds. ...Until this time, there was no Methodist church, but only a society within the Episcopal Church. These Methodist missionaries were permitted to preach but not to administer the ordinances of the church. All communication with England had been eliminated and the Revolutionary War was into its second year....No help could be expected from John Wesley. He was a staunch Episcopalian and would never agree to a split within the Episcopal Church. It was with this background that the leaders of Methodist thought in America, and especially in Virginia and Maryland, began to form the idea of separating from the Episcopal Church. Until 1784, they labored with this thought and in December of that year, at the Conference held in Baltimore, the Methodist Societies in America organized under the title "The Methodist Episcopal Church." Thanks for the list of ministers - Charlotte County; however, I have a question about one of the Methodist ministers: Devereau Jarrett - this name appears in the Episcopal list and I know that he was an Episcopal minister - My husband's great grandfather. Devereau Jarrett Claiborne Slaughter was a Methodist minister. Could it be that the last name of this minister was left off and that it was my husband's ancestor? I have been to Charlotte several time to look for ancestors and have found the people in the Clerk's Office to be most helpful and they have good - old - records. I appreciate the Charlotte Web Page which has so much useful info. Thanks. Claudia in Nelson County

Hi, I just subscribed not long ago and am trying to get my ducks in a row to come to the courthouse. I live in NC but my relatives there are McKenney, Cardwell, Michaux, LaGrand. I would like to hear from anyone related to those families. ALSO I noticed on a map that a county to the NE of Charlotte has the town of McKenney. Can anyone tell me about it? Denise Wood
I too do research there and have the same comments. As to where to stay, there are motels in Appomattox which is about 12 miles away, or you may go further to Lynchburg where they have hotels as well!
