Dear NEWCOM query, Saluda F. NEWCOM is the daughter of Jesse Newcomb and Elizabeth SKELTON, Jesse NEWCOM's Father is John NEWCOM who married Susanna WILMOTH, they had a number of children.... Elizabeth SKELTON's father is James SKELTON (I believe), and James SKELTON is mentioned in the History of Charlotte County, he cussed and was put in the stocks for a while (ha, ha). I have located a person in New Jersey who has old estate records for Jesse NEWCOMB and Elizabeth SKELTON, this person also has portraits of the coupel. Anyways, I have been trying for over five years to get a copy of those pictures. One person claims to have found who John NEWCOMB's parents are, but it has not been substantiated.... I am looking for the surnames of MARTIN, CARR, ABBOTT, FULLER, MILLIKEN, STRIBLING, LECROY. Elizabeth Carr married Austin Martin in 1793. Her father was Thomas Carr. Elizabeth and Austin had 4 children. Nancy Martin, m. Silas Carr, William B. Martin, m. Polly Abbott, Sarah Martin, m. George H. Milliken, Beverly S. Martin, m. Mary Ann Fuller. Sarah and George Milliken had 2 daughters. Elizabeth A., m. John Milton Fuller, Nancy Ann Milliken, m. John Howard Poyner. At some point some of them moved to Nacagdoches, TX. Around 1870 or so. Jepo/Jepsea/Jesse/Jepeo NEWCOMB family On the 1850 and 60 census they have a daughter named Saluda. I would like to find out where they got the name. Has anyone any information on this family??? Does anyone know what the wifes maiden name was? Her first name appears to be Elizabeth. Children in 1860 were: Saluda, Louisa, Emma, Robert, Sarah, Minerva, and Nicholas. As a clarification to the post below - Appomattox County was formed in 1845 from Buckingham County. While the primary land mass of Appomattox County consisted of land formerly in Buckingham, segments of land were taken from Prince Edward, Charlotte and Campbell Counties to form Appomattox County. Our Lunenburg County ancestors did not go directly from Lunenburg to Appomattox. As posted before, the division of Lunenburg County is as follows, remembering that, when counties divided, almost all of the records remained in the ORIGINAL county: 1634 - Charles City County is formed - an original shire 1703 - Prince George County is formed from Charles City 1732 - Brunswick County is formed from Prince George 1746 - Lunenburg County is formed from Brunswick 1752 - Halifax County is formed from Lunenburg. Eventually, Halifax will be divided into Pittsylvania (1767), Henry (1777) and Patrick (1791) Counties. 1754 - Bedford County is formed from Lunenburg. Eventually, Bedford will be divided into Campbell (1782) and Franklin (1786) Counties. To form Franklin County, some territory will be taken from Henry County. 1765 - Charlotte and Mecklenburg Counties are formed from Lunenburg 1845 - Appomattox County is formed from Buckingham County. Looking for these three ladies who all married into the Lionberger/many spellings, family, all marrying John Ulrich Lionberger (I, II, and III). Elizabeth Burckholter married about 1700, Barberry Bear married about 1732, and Barbara Boyer married about 1760. I have plenty of information on the lionberger's, but none on these great grandmothers of mine. Any information would be helpful. All could have and probably did live in the area. Paul, Me, again. Now that I have sent the previous response to you, I can read your original again, and see that I did not respond to all of its questions. As a 14 year-old, about 1932, somehow I got the (unpaid) job of driving a WPA man around. He was carefully measuring all road distances in our area, recording cemetaries, and talking to locals about a lot of things I showed him a couple of cemetaries he had not known about. I assume the WPA wrote all this up., but have never seen it, and wouldn't know where to find it. This would have been in the Bacon District of Charlotte Co., VA, the southernmost tip of Charlotte Co. Public Forks I am pretty sure is also in same county, but Halifax border is not far away, just across the Staunton River, I guess. By all means, posting Charlotte Co. cemetaries on its web post would be great. I have seen similar postings on other VA counties' web posts, and greatly appreciate someone's having done it. Paul, I don't know the name or the location of the church(es) at Public Forks, but I know where that community is. If you have a current VA roadmap, head south from Richmond on US 15 and 360 (same route, but may have been replaced with a freeway, since I left that area in 1943.) Go past Burkeville and Keysville; about 20 miles further south, the two routes diverge, with 15 going south, and 360 going west. This intersection is Barnesville, where another route goes east to Chase City. Go west from Barnesville about 4-5 miles to an intersection. This is Public Forks. A road north from here goes to Randolph. 360 continues west through South Boston in Halifax Co., and to Danville in Pittsylvania Co. About all I can recall at Public Forks was a general mercantile store and gas station, which may have had a post office. I grew up at Red Oak (some good roadmaps still show it), Charlotte Co., 3 miles south of Barnesville. Gordon Adams: GorAdams@aol.com
