Hi, I've been using "The Personal Property Tax Lists for the Year 1787 for Charlotte County, Virginia (also called "1787 Census") to locate my ancestors. Can anyone give me the boundaries of Tax List A and Tax List B or tell me where to find this information.? Thanks. Elizabeth Wright Smith
Subj: [VACHARLO-L] Re: Bartlett JAMES b. c1770/John RAWLINS, Guardian Date: 5/5/99 10:35 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: Kiltie187@aol.com (Tom McCargo) Reply-to: VACHARLO-L@rootsweb.com To: VACHARLO-L@rootsweb.com jslloyd@swbell.net (John and Sue Lloyd) The answer to your question I think, lies in earlier Charlotte Co Court Order Books . I began my extraction with Book Seven and that contained the dismissial of what I suspect was an earlier perhaps defective suit that was reinstated on 4 Mar 1793 Note that next year the suit moves towards settlement 6 OCTOBER 1794 Pg 238 Davis James, Callicott et al, Plaintiffs vs James Barnes, adm'r of Thomas James, dec'd, Defendant - a suit in Chancery, and an order of this court 4th day of March 1793 On the motion of the plaintiffs by their atty, that the Sheriff summons Mack Goode, Hillary Moseley, Edmund Moseley and Langston Bacon, commissioners appointed, to appear here in the next Court of Quarter Sessions, and there to show cause why they do not make report agreeable to said interlocutory order. Again in Book 10 there is another James action though here it's Thomas Hugh James. pg 195 John Barnes, adm'r of James Barnes, dec'd, Plaintiff vs Thomas Hugh James, John James and John Callicott; Defendants - on a petition by note. It appearing by the sheriff's returns that Hugh Thomas James is not an inhabitant of this county, therefore the suit against him abates. The other defendants, being duly summoned and not appearing, therefore the plaintiff recover against the defendant £ 2/14/0 w/interest from 1 Dec 1793. Barlett James was still in Charlotte Co and apparently no longer a minor in 8 Aug 1797 Bk 11 Pg 79 On the motion of Bartlett James for leave to file his bill of injunction . . . against Walthal Holcomb, assignee of John Bibb, who was the assignee of Robert Saunders . . . whereupon, he with John McCargo, his security . . . etc. I hope this helps Tom McCargo

Dear Fellow Searchers, With the help of another wonderful gen enthusiast in NC, I recently found 2 court documents that seem to relate to my 5G grandfather BARTLETT JAMES (b circa 1770 in VA, probably Charlotte County). One of the documents can be viewed at: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/charlotte/misc/ob9char.txt COURT ORDERS - CHARLOTTE COUNTY, VA BOOK NINE 1792 - 1794 Submitted by Tom McCargo 11 April 1999 4 March 1793 This seems to be a suit seeking to dissolve Thomas JAMES' estate. Thomas died intestate. His wife Sarah (Unk) JAMES married James DAVIS. Some of their adult children and their infant son Bartlett's guardian (John RAWLINS) were suing to have Thomas' property and slaves sold, with proceeds distributed among Sarah and the kids. This part confuses me, because the next document (which can be viewed at ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/charlotte/misc/ob7char.txt) is contained in an early Court book: COURT ORDERS - CHARLOTTE COUNTY, VA - BOOK SEVEN 1786 - 1789. On page 67, the suit against James DAVIS and his wife Sarah, widow of Thomas JAMES, is dropped. How would this "cart before the horse" documentation occur? Do the dates in the Court records book refer to something other than the time of the filing or judgment being handed down? I have a request of anyone who may be able to look up these early court documents in Charlotte Co. WOULD YOU CHECK FOR AN ORDER APPOINTING JOHN RAWLINS/ROLINGS AS GUARDIAN "OF THE INFANT, BARTLETT/BARTLEY JAMES." It may very well be mixed in with a lot of other "edicts" and thus would not necessarily just jump out at the reader. Just as a point of interest, Bartlett JAMES married his guardian's (John RAWLINS/ROLINGS) daughter Sarah "Sally" (b. circa 1769) on March 16, 1791 in Halifax Co, VA. They migrated to Mecklenburg/Montgomery County, NC and later to Smith Co, TN. Bartlett died in 1845 and Sally died in about 1855, both in Smith Co, TN. Any comments or information will be appreciated tremendously. Best regards, Sue James Lloyd The Woodlands, TX
JoLee, First of all,THANKS, THANKS, for all the work you do. Can you forward my request to James Maloney? I am coming to Charlotte County on May 14-17th, and am interested in locating some old home places. 1. Isaac Overbey'store and home 2. E.H.Jeffress homeplace, he was the agent at the depot. 3. Ash Camp Baptist Church cemetary where most of the Jeffress's and Overbey"s are buried. I have not been successful in finding much about the Jeffresses but "Charlotte, Rich Indeed" has some information about Isaac Overbey. If you have any input, please feel free to offer it. THANKS A MILLION FOR YOUR EFFORTS!!!1 Sallie Lewis Hurt --- JoLee Spears <spearsj@bellsouth.net> wrote: > A "Look-Up" section has been added to the VAGenWeb > Charlotte County page. > > As a starter Bel Wise has offered to do look-ups > from Charlotte County Will > Books 1 & 2. > > James Maloney has the 1863 CSA Map of Charlotte and > will do look-ups for > homes, > etc - He noted Campbell Maloney is on the map as > "Maloneys Shopps." > JoLee > > JoLee Gregory Spears spearsj@bellsouth.net > Charlotte County VAGenWeb > http://www.rootsweb.com/~vacharlo/indexcha.htm > Halifax County VAGenWeb > http://www.rootsweb.com/~vahalifa/indexhal.htm > Mecklenburg County VAGenWeb > http://www.rootsweb.com/~vameckle/index.htm > > > ==== VACHARLO Mailing List ==== > http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl > You can search Archives of some RootsWeb Mailing > Lists at the above > address. Hi all, This is my first post to the Charlotte County, Virginia mailing list. In an attempt to possibly help those who are struggling finding certain persons in Charlotte County or wanting other documentation on ancestors, I am submitting all the buyers at John Fears' estate auction held October 26, 1827. I am not very good at translating; therefore, if you recognize a name whom I have destroyed, please let me know. The following buyers at the auction are James Fears, Jordren Middleton, Thomas Garrette, Pleasant Eudarley, Gideon Brooks, Robert Robinson, Nancy Fears, Travis Perkinson, Elkanah Cheatham, Stimpson Fallin, Joel Gullivant, John Michael, Samuel P. Lodge, Richard Wilson, William Crawley, William Smith, Robert Moore, William B. Price, Thomas P. Hoge, Henry Bedford, Steven Davis, Brookes Perkinson, Susan Graday, and Thomas S. Boulding. The administrator of the estate was Stimpson Fallin. The sale of the property is not recorded until August 5, 1828. (Charlotte County Will Book 6 page 142) I currently have James Fears as John's son and Nancy Fears as John's wife. John Fears had daughters as evidenced by the 1810 and 1820 census but don't know how many for sure. I am hoping that all potential son-in-laws are here. Have not found female Fears marriages in Charlotte County that could be John's daughters. All female Fears marriage during the early 1800s relate to the Reverend William Fears who left Charlotte County in 1821. If you recognize a name and want a copy, please email me your address and I will send it. Gordie
A "Look-Up" section has been added to the VAGenWeb Charlotte County page. As a starter Bel Wise has offered to do look-ups from Charlotte County Will Books 1 & 2. James Maloney has the 1863 CSA Map of Charlotte and will do look-ups for homes, etc - He noted Campbell Maloney is on the map as "Maloneys Shopps." I have a Thomas (Thos) D. Eggleston born in Charlotte Co. Va around 1800. He may have married Mary J. (Unknown). He had at least one child; John J. Eggleston, born 1826 in Charlotte Co. Va. John J. married California Nunnally (Nunaly) on October 6, 1856 in Brooks Hollow, Kanawha Co. (W)Va. I also have a 1850 Charlotte Co. Va census report that shows a Thomas (D) Eggleston, born around 1795 married to Mildred (Barlow) Eggleston on January 10, 1842. They had (at least) on child: Charles Henry Eggleston, born December 8, 1848 married Maria Jane Inge on February 1846 in Lunenburg, Va. I don't know if there is any connection between these individuals; although, that seems likely. Hopefully you will find this information useful. If you have any information concerning the above family(s) , please pass it on to me. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Dear Fellow Searchers, I am searching for information on the wife, parents, children and siblings of THOMAS JAMES, who died intestate before 4 Mar 1793 in Charlotte Co, VA. Thomas James' wife was SARAH, who married James DAVIS after Thomas' death. Court records show Thomas and Sarah's children to be THOMAS HUGH JAMES, JOHN JAMES, GEORGE JAMES, SARAH JAMES (who married JOHN CALLICOTTE) and BARTLETT ("BARKLEY", an infant at the time of Thomas James' death, under the guardianship of JOHN RAWLINS). If you have information about any of these people, please contact me. I have information to share. I will be so grateful for your help! Best regards, Sue James Lloyd The Woodlands, Texas

Melanie, I have no information at all about the surname "Noel," but just an observation - Charlotte County was formed in 1765. Prior to that time, the land was in Lunenburg County, but Lunenburg did not become a separate county until 1746. So, if your evidence shows that the family was "always" at its location in what became Charlotte County, have you tried looking in Brunswick County? Lunenburg County was formed from Brunswick County. You might find clues in Brunswick County. Annette Elam Wetzel On Wed, 21 Apr 1999 15:06:27 -0400 Melanie <melaniejk@geocities.com> writes: >Hello. Hello. I'm trying to find information on a Philip Noel who married a Polly Webb in Charlotte County @ 1767. I am trying to find Philip Noel's parents' names. Philip would have been born @ 1738 in Charlotte County and died May 10, 1804 in Charlotte County, VA. I am also trying to find out where Philip was buried. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I've heard that there might be a link to Cornelius Noel, but I couldn't find it. Sincerely, Melanie
Melanie, Philip may have been named Philemon, and he or his parents may have been born in Essex County, Rappahannock County, or Culpeper County. The NOELs were from that area. Frank
Hennings Statutes , Chapter 11, p. 325 lists the following men: Joseph Greer, Jacobl Feable, Anthony Epperson, John Ayres, thomas Hunt, Richard Bandy, Rowland wheeler, Josiah Meadows, Randolph Richardson, Joseph Wilson, Daniel Huddleston, Thomas Watts, and Edward Hore. Are these Prince Edward/Charlotte/Campbell county men? The date is October 1780. They surely look familiar to me (at least some of them).
