    3. LIsa, I may have info for you. I don't know if anyone has answered you or not. I've been in Canada and am slowly wading through my email. I turned off all but the charlotte co list, thankfully. I know Marcellus Holt through a book titled "I Wrote you Word The Poignant Letters of Private Holt, John Lee Holt 1829 1863. edited by James A. Mumper # 498 of 1000. signed by descendants of John Lee I believe the book is still in print. It's the story of a John Lee Holt and the letters he wrote his wife before his death in the war. John Lee Holt is the brother of Marcellus and Nicholas, as well as many others. It was sent to me as they thought it was my line of Holts, and they are second cousins, but not direct lines. Marcellus is the son of James F. HOlt b. 1804 d. 1865, and Susan Mason. married 20 Dec 1827 in CAmbpell co VA. They moved to Charlotte Co and died there. James' father is James Holt b. 1760 d. 1834 Charlotte Co Va and his wife Eleanor. James is my 6 G uncle. James father is Plunkett Holt b. 1726 in Amelia/Nottoway Co Va d. 1789 in Prince Edward Co VA his wife was Anne ____ died after 1800 in Cambpell Co VA? I come from James' brother John. Actually I have a second line that ends up in a step grandmother from this crew as well. Plunkett's parents were Plunkett Harroway Holt b. 1689 and died abt 1767 VA. and ? Elizabeth Robertson. Plunkett is the child of Richard Holt (b. 1628 Rochdale England d 22 Apr 1693, in VA) and Dorothy Harroway (?). Richard was the son of Robert HOlt b 1803 in Rochdale England and arrived in St. Mary's Md in 1646,with wife Dorothy Heywood and 4 children. They are quite infamous in MD history, but it's a long story. I can fill in some blanks. The person you most likely need to speak with is Mark Holt on AOL. He's got a huge data base on HOlts. I also come from a long line of Harvey's. I'd like your info on Marcellus and any Harvey info you have going back that will tell me which Harvey your's comes from. I come from Thomas d. 1782 Charlotte, John d. 1813 Charlotte, Thomas BW d. 1870 charlotte Or so (going off my head), Polly Harvey m. Ralph Jackson in 1804. So, I think we may have a lot to talk about. Marcellus served with John Lee HOlt during the war. You need to get a copy of that book. It may be available in Charlotte Co. I'll see if I can find where it came from. It's not an old book. 2. Hello list members, I am a new subscriber, and I have gone thru. the archives for the list. I am a VENABLE descendant, and I am researching James VENABLE. He is listed as a head of family in the Charlotte Co. census of 1782 with 13 whites and 22 blacks I would like to know the names of his wife and children. Does anyone know if he had a daughter named Rachel? I would appreciate a reply. Thanks much, Ann

    3. Hello Charlotte Co.! I am researching my husband's family, and his maternal grandmother, Mary "Kathryn" HOLT, is from Charlotte Co. The surnames listed in the subject section are those that I am interested in researching. I have been able to identify my husband's great-great grandfather Marcellus HOLT b. ~1842 (per the Virginia 1870 Census Index). He married Emma EAST, and they had four children: Leslie Taylor (my husband's great-grandfather and father to Kathryn), Paschal, Benjamin, and Josephine. The family lived in the Phenix area, and they attended Bethel Baptist Church (Marcellus and his son Leslie Taylor are buried in the church cemetery). I believe that Marcellus had a brother named Nicholas HOLT who was wounded during the Civil War, and family photographs show a scar square in the middle of his forehead from the bullet wound. Leslie Taylor HOLT (b. November 11, 1881 d. 1942) married Mary Willie HARVEY (b. February 05, 1882 d. 1951)...Mary was the daughter of Henry Watkins HARVEY and Susie RAINE. Mary was one of eight Harvey children: Mary, Henry, Cleveland, Allie, Norma, Irene, Julia, and Dorothy. The Harvey family was Presbyterian. I am desperately seeking anyone with whom I can share information. I could not locate Marcellus Holt on the 1850 and 1860 Virginia Census Indices. Any response is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Lisa

    3. Your information was exactly what I needed, Annette, and thank you so much. I failed to mention in my message that the Cub Creek Church in the article by Katie Haensel on the Charlotte Co. GenWeb page and also the Cub Creek Church discussed in the book by Elizabeth Venable Gaines was Presbyterian, but perhaps everyone knew that anyway. The members of the first Cub Creek Presbyterian Congregation were Scotch- Irish and arrived in Charlotte Co. around 1738 after finding the best lands already occupied in Pennsylvania. They came down the Valley of Virginia as did most of the Scotch-Irish and Germans. I had read, however, that there was a Cub Creek Baptist Church, and evidently, that is the Cub Creek Church that John Weatherford served. I believe (but have no proof yet) that my ancestors were Scotch-Irish and most likely the immigrant ancestor was Presbyterian. With Presbyterian ministers in short supply I guess his descendants became Baptist as did many of the other Scotch-Irish. Thanks for the additional information about John Weatherford. Incidentally, there is a John Weatherford listed with members of his family in the minutes of the Meherrin Baptist Church, 1771-1844 although not as a minister. Elizabeth Wright Smith

    1. [VACHARLO-L] Re:John Weatherford
    2. Several months ago, I posted a list of the names and denominations of 18th Century ministers in Charlotte County. Due to a computer crash, and my failure to print it, I no longer have that list, but if anyone saved it, they might repost it. John Weatherford was an early Baptist minister, who served several churches in Charlotte, Halifax, and Pittsylvania Counties. John Weatherford was born into a Presbyterian family in Charlotte County about 1740, and became a Baptist minister about 1760/1761. He spent the early part of his career as a travelling evangelist. In the later part of the 1700's, he was pastor of Cub Creek Church in Charlotte County and of Lower Fallings Church in Campbell County. He moved to Halifax County in 1818, and to Pittsylvania County in 1823, where he died 23 January 1833. Hope that helps. Annette Elam Wetzel

    3. I noticed that two of the marriages below had the Rev. Drury Lacy as minister, the marriage of John CLARK and Sally WATKINS and the marriage of Nathaniel PRICE and Polly VENABLE. The Rev. Drury Lacy is listed as Supply of Cub Creek Meeting House in a book by Elizabeth Venable Gaines, "Cub Creek Church and Congregation, 1738-1838", c1931. He was first listed in 1787 and again from 1797-1804. I have been very much interested in Charlotte Co. church history since reading "A Visit to the Cub Creek Church Site" by Katie Haensel on the Charlotte Co. GenWeb site and borrowed the above book from the Library of VA on interlibrary loan. It's wonderful to be able to find out the religion and church affiliation of one's ancestors, although so far I've reached a dead end with mine. I also noticed that Thomas CLARK and Elizabeth HOWARD were married by the Rev. John Weatherford. My ancestors also were married by Rev. John Weatherford, but I don't know which church he served. He is listed in the Weatherford family Bible (Archives-Charlotte Co. GenWeb page) as pastor of Cub Creek Church, but he is not listed as one of the Pastors and Supplies of Cub Creek Meeting House, 1738-1930 in the book by Elizabeth Venable Gaines. There was a Cub Creek Baptist Church, later known as Salem Baptist Church, but I don't know if this is the right church or not. Do any of you have any idea which church John Weatherford served----if so, I would love to hear from you. Thanks.
