    2. Galax Gazette Obits--November 06, 2001 Carrie V. Byrd, 91 Carrie V. Byrd, 91, of Galax, formerly of Fries, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Blue Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Wayne G. Byrd. She was born Aug. 29, 1910, in Wythe County to John and Mary Jane Smith Kane. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Clifton Phibbs of Fries; three stepchildren, Doris Bond of Galax, Sanford Byrd of Fries and Maxine Byrd of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, Emmett Kane of King George; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Saturday at Fries United Methodist Church with burial in the Fries Cemetery. The Revs. Tim Worgan and John Williams officiated.Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Ettie R. Cox, 99 Ettie R. Cox, 99, of Independence, the Gold Hill Community, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at her home. She was the widow of Dewey Cox. She was born March 9, 1902, in Grayson County, the Gold Hill Community. Survivors include several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and –nephews; several great-great-nieces and –nephews; several great-great-great-nieces and –nephews; a special great-nieces, Shirley Kennedy Richardson of Sparta, N.C.; and special care-givers, Barbara and Mack Halsey and Martha Dowell. A funeral was held Saturday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with burial in the Bridle Creek Cemetery. The Rev. The Rev. James Wilson Ward, 75 The Rev. James Wilson Ward, 75, of Ivanhoe, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Twin County Regional Hospital. He was born May 10, 1926, in Greensboro, N.C., to Clayton and Hattie Edwards Ward. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Ward of Ivanhoe; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Brenda and Wes Denson of Eden, N.C., Rita Blevins of the home, Barbara and Wade Lawson and Marth and Homer Norman, all of Fries, Teresa and Richard Goodman of Dobson, N.C., and Donna and Jim Green of Paoli, Ind.; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Nathan and Dawn Ward of Fries, Mark and Lanor Ward of Max Meadows and Dan and Sally Ward of Ivanhoe and Ted Ward of Galax; 28 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucy Bowman of Greensboro, N.C., and Mamie Lea Zambon of Tampa, Fla.; and a brother, Ray Ward of Greensboro, N.C. A funeral was held Saturday at Cold Springs United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Hillsville VFW Post 1115. The Revs. Rance Edwards, Fred Jennings, Matt Linkous and Mark Linkous officiated.Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
