    2. The Carroll News Obits--October 31, 2001 HARRIETT R. BENZING Harriett Rose Benzing, 81, of Galax, died Oct. 22, 2001, in Waddell Nursing Home. She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine Lederer of Woodlawn; one grandson, one great-granddaughter. Funeral was Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Bobbie Burcham. Burial was in Monta Vista Cemetery. CLARENCE A. BOBBITT Clarence Andrew Bobbitt, 84, of Galax, died Oct. 22, 2001, in Twin County Regional Hospital. He is survived by sisters, Clara Leonard and Lura Carico both of Galax. Funeral was Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. in the Monta Vista Mausoleum. Officiating ministers were the Rev. Ted Bartlett and the Rev. Harvey Carico. MARY T. BONDURANT Mary T. Bondurant, 95, of Laurel Fork, passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001. Born at Laurel Fork on Sept. 16, 1906, she was the daughter of the late E.M. Turner and Maggie Duncan Turner. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Otis Ritchie and Mack Boundurant as well as a sister, Dott Turner Marshall and seven brothers, James G. Turner, Robert H. Turner, Baxter K. Turner, John P. Turner, Samuel C. Turner, Carl D. Turner and Edward M. Turner, Jr. A 1925 graduate of Beechwood High School, Heidelberg, KY, she was for many years associated with the Presbyterian Orphanage, Barium Springs, NC as a house mother. During these years, she personally cared for her mother and father and assisted other family members. By her hard work and planning, she ensured that her parent's farm at Laurel Fork remained intact. Her charitable works and church activities were many and touched countless lives. She is survived by eight nieces and eight nephews and the many children who were at the time in her excellent and loving care. I lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to either the Stone Mountain Baptist Church or the Turner-Duncan Cemetery Fund, c/o Edward M. Turner, III, P. O. Box 393, Hillsville, VA 24343. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Stone Mountain Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Woods and Rev. Paul Horne officiating. Burial will be in the Turner-Duncan Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, VA is in charge of arrangements. MAUDE R. BREWER Maude Roberts Brewer, 96, of Fries, died Oct. 28, 2001, in Asbury Center in Wytheville. She is survived by nieces and nephews. Funeral was Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Arlin Shupe and the Rev. Rance Edwards. Burial was in the Providence Cemetery. IBERN E. COX Ibern Ergo Cox, 77, of Hillsville, passed away Oct. 21, 2001, in Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. He served in the U. S. Navy in WWII, was a Life Member of Hillsville VFW Post 1115 and a member of Hillsville Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Cox; one son, R. Carter Cox of Vinton; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Ann and Kenneth Webb of Oviedo, FL; two sisters, Eurseline Horsley of Greensboro, NC and Willadean Summers of Galax; a sister-in-law, Lois G. Cox of Dugspur; one niece and several nephews. Funeral was Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. in Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel conducted by the Rev. Norman Goad. Burial was in the Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery. Military Rites were conducted by Hillsville VFW Post 1115 and Masonic Service was by Hillsville Lodge #193 AF&AM. TRESSIE D. MARSHALL Tressie Delphia Marshall, daughter of George W. and Laura Semones McMillan, died on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in Orlando, FL at the age of 83. Tressie was born in Carroll County, VA April 28, 1918. Tressie was the wife of the late Sherman C. Marshall. They were the parents of seven children: Glen W. Marshall (deceased), Joseph W. Marshall (deceased), Larry F. Marshall of Kissimmee, Florida, Teddy W. Marshall of Seattle, Washington, Phoebe Marshall Matos of Orlando, Florida, Brenda Marshall Inman of Kissimmee, Florida and Katherine Marshall Bowman of Mount Airy, NC. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Gladesboro Evangelical Lutheran Church with Reverend Duane Steele and Reverend Clarence Marshall officiating. LELIA H. MORRIS Mrs. Lelia Virginia Hawks Morris, age 82, of 428 Maple Grove Church Rd., Mt. Airy, NC, widow of Mr. Ernest Franklin Morris, died at Northern Hospital of Surry County Friday morning, Oct. 26, 2001. Mrs. Morris was born Oct. 25, 1919, in Surry County, NC to the late Richard Carl and Stella Galyean Hawks. She was retired from RSVP and was the oldest member of Ivy Green Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters and two sons-in-law, Mildred Marshall and Maxine Carlisle both of Mt. Airy, NC, Loyce and Curtis Sowers of Floyd, VA and Melody and Steven Slaughter of Willis, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Edward and Judy Morris of Lowgap, NC; 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, three sisters and twobrothers-in-law, Hazel York, Mt. Airy, NC, Mary and Wayne Moore and Elsie Bryant all of Lowgap, NC, Paul Tompkins of Sparta, NC; two brothers and five sisters-in-law, Russell and Barbara Hawks, Mt. Airy, NC, Mitchell and Mabel Hawks, Lowgap, NC, Willie Hawks, Lowgap, NC, Naomi Hawks, Lowgap, NC and Beatrice Hawks, Mt. Airy, NC. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Hodges and Maude Tompkins; three brothers, Claude, Swanson and Raleigh Hawks and two grandchildren, Crystal Morris and Brandon Matthew Slaughter. Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Ivy Green Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Lester Bryant. Burial was in the Morris Cemetery in Fancy Gap, VA. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday night at Moody Funeral Home of Mt. Airy. HARRY K. NEFF Harry Keith Neff, 72, of Galax, VA passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, in Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, VA. Mr. Neff was an agent for Nationwide Insurance Co. from 1962-1990. He was an officer for the Virginia State Police from 1953-1962. He was a Life Member of the Hillsville VFW Post #1115. He was in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict as an Air Traffic Controller. Mr. Neff for the past 12 years, was a Board Member of the Carilion New River Valley Health Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Horton Neff of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Neff Hutchison and A. Michael Hutchison of Hillsville, VA; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Edwin Neff and Rene M. Neff of Galax, VA; sister, Juanita Hobbs Neff of Galax, VA; four grandchildren, Kevin Michael Hutchison, Mary Beth Hutchison, Rachel Mckenzie Neff and Jeana Morgan Neff. Funeral was at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, in Hillsville Christian Church. The Rev. Duane Steele and the Rev. Dennis Hutchison officiated. Burial was in Mo a Vista Memory Gardens, Galax. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Hillsville Christian Church. Military Rites were conducted by Hillsville VFW Post 1115. JAMES H. PAYNE James Harvey Payne, 83, of Max Meadows, died Oct. 22, 2001, in Pulaski Community Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Payne; two daughters and son-in-law, Carolyn and Carl Collin Wright of Wake Forest, NC, Lois Akers of Greensboro, NC; son-in-law, Bob Walton of Mechanicsburg, PA; two sisters, Emmie Nichols and Carrie Bond both of Max Meadows; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. Funeral was Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. in Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel conducted by Elder Sidney Rakes. Burial was in the Swecker Cemetery RICKEY W. SEXTON Rickey Wayne Sexton, 45, of Wytheville, died Oct. 24, 2001, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Toni McClintockSexton; daughter, Tiffancy Savanna Sexton of the home; four sisters, Rebecca Sarkijarvi of Rural Retreat, Nancy Sexton, Debbie Hancock and Ginger Cornett all of Wytheville; two brothers, Charles "Pete" Sexton of Marion, James Sexton of Wytheville. Funeral was Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. in the Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. J.C. McPeak and the Rev. Jerry Bell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church or to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 W. Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.
