I had no idea that Thomas Gardner would have had a daughter that had lived until this week and am sorry to hear of her death. Thomas Gardner and my Great Grandfather Edward Rice Wall served during the Civil War together. Thomas signed Edward's pension application on the Oath of Resident Witness form, Sept. 24, 1910, stating that they had known each other for forty years in Carroll County Virginia. There is a notation at the top of the form. It is extremely difficult to read, but it either states that "He signed up infantry with me." or "He signed up Wytheco with me." I think it is the first, but can not be sure. Thomas and Edward were boys that I am sure became men far too quickly as Edward was only 13 or 14 and Thomas could not have been much older.
