The Galax Gazette Carlos Rudolph "Rudy" Chappell, 89, of Box 32A White Oak Mobile Home Estates (Green Valley) Bluefield, W.Va., died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at his home. He was born Jan. 9, 1912, in Woodlawn to the late Henry Johnson and Mary Alice Bell Chappell. He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he was a former deacon and member of the board. He was also a member of the Association of Locomotive Engineers. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers, Joe, Roy, Curtis and Ray Chappell; and three sisters, Guida Allen, Eula Vass and Oda May Chappell. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Anne Chappell; a daughter, Carolyn Bradley and her husband Ray of Green Valley; a sister, Kathleen Jennings of Fredricksburg; two grandchildren, Lori Hylton and her husband Eddie, and Michael Bradley and his wife Kim; four great-grandchildren, Zach Hylton, Michael Bradley, Ryan Bradley and Cory Bradley; and a very special care giver, Edna Browning. A funeral was held Tuesday at the First Christian Church with burial in the Roselawn Memorial Gradens, Princeton. The Revs. Michael Cunningham and Pat Wheeler officiated. She was born Oct. 9, 1922, in Elk Creek to Jim and Mae Shupe Hale. She was the widow of Willie Cole. She was born May 26, 1907, in Grayson County to Peyton Evans and Maggie Byrd Evans. She was the widow of Stewart Lee Frazier. Survivors include her daughter, Lois Webb of Galax; two sons, Ben Frazier of Miami, Fla., and Wilmer Frazier of Fredericksburg; a sister, Mary Jackson of Fries; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Tuesday at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home with burial in the Monta Vista Cemetery. Dr. Tom Conley officiated. ========================= Ralph Frederick Gatchel Jr., 57, of Galax, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Northern Surry Hospital. He was born June 4, 1944, in Illinois, to Ralph Frederick and Edna Harmer Gatchel. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca W. Gatchel of Galax; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Catherine Lily Gatchel of Hamilton, N.J., Ann Margaret and Shawn Utt of Catawba and Mary Stuart and Bobby Cheeks of Independence; a son, Eric Gatchel of Galax; his mother, Edna Gatchel of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Kathelle Gatchel of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Donna and Rickey Wilson of Galax; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Mike and Linda Watson of Galax and Roger and Trish Golding of Hillsville; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and –nephews. He was a Sunday school teacher for the adult Bible Sunday School class at the First United Methodist Church, a member of the Galax Y’s Men and a member of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department for 13 years. A celebration service was held Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Tom Conley and Harold Nelson officiating. Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements =============================== It was 6:15 in the evening of June 30, 2001, that the angels came and carried our precious mother, Sarah Katherine Smith Hackler, home to be with our beloved father, William Eugene Hackler, who left her Aug. 19, 1998, and her father and mother, Samuel and Salatha Caroline Petrey Smith. Other predeceased were five brothers, four sisters, two grandsons and four granddaughters. She was born in Norton, Va., Jan. 23, 1918, married June 22, 1935, blessed and survived by five daughters and five sons-in-law, Shirley Jean and Victor E. Tacker, Barbara Louise and Theron A. Hall, all of Pelham, N.C., Patricia Ann and John R. Fielder Jr., of Dalewood, Sandar Katherine and Robert L. Coomes Jr., of Galax, and Dana M. and Gary L. Cockram of Meadows of Dan; and one son, Tharren Eugene Hackler of Galax. In addition, one sister, Ruby Darnell of Kingsport, Tenn., 14 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of Galax Chapter 165 Order of the Eastern Star. She served as Grand Esther in the Grand Chapter of Virginia. Also, as Grand Representative to Puerto Rico. She was a member of Appalachian Trail Chapter NSDAR and belonged to numerous historical and genealogical societies. She will be sorely missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as their "Mother Kate." ========================== Thomas Michael Johnson, 67, of Ivanhoe, went home with the Lord June 29, 2001. He was born Oct. 17, 1933, in Wythe County to Frank M. Johnson and Eliza E. Johnson. Survivors include his loving wife, Joyce L. Johnson of the home; four devoted daughters and three sons-in-law, Joyce Ann Mallory of Arlington, Texas, Martha and "Fuzzy" Bartlett, Donna and Rick Iroler, and Rita and "Hawkeye" Hawks of Galax; two brothers, Bob Johnson and Trent Johnson of Ivanhoe; seven precious grandchildren, Brad Hawks, Jennifer Templin, Dara Iroler, Jordan, Jacy, Jacob and Jillian Bartlett; and two special nieces, Delores Ray and Sue Schasteen of Oklahoma City, Okla. Also leaving behind a host of loving friends, neighbors and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Monday at Mount Hope United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. She was born April 2, 1919, in Grayson County to Boyd M. Swinney and Lulu Dell Shupe Swinney. She was the widow of Oval J. Porter. Survivors include a son, Kenneth T. Porter of Cheseapeake; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
