    2. Galax Gazzette Obits--October 24, 2001 AMOS LESTER HALL Amos Lester Hall, 77, of Fries, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Twin County Regional Hospital. She was the widow of Mertie Ruth Hall. She was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Cripple Creek to William and Melinda Hamm Hall. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and Ray Pfeiffer of Freemont, Ohio, Charlotte Taylor of Clyde, Ohio, and Gail and Tommy Edwards of Hillsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Roxanne Hall of Bellevue, Ohio; a sister, Janette Marsh of North Carolina; a brother, Cicero Hall of Eldercare of Hillsville; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Sunday at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home with burial in the Fries Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Fain officiated. JOHN CASSELL LARGEN John Cassell Largen, 72, of Roanoke, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born to Berlie C. Large and Ruby Bowman Largen. Survivors include his wife, Glorine Cochran Largen of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, John Gary and Lisa Harris Largen of Columbia, S.C., James Timothy and Judy Largen and Phillip Todd Largen, all of Roanoke; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lula Mae Gambill of Galax, Faye and J.R. Williams of Sparta, N.C., and Betty and Syd Clifton of Warner Robins, Ga.; a granddaughter; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Sunday at Gladesboro Luthern Church with burial in the Gladesboro Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Graham officiated. Military rites were conducted at graveside by the Hillsville Masonic Lodge 193. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. JOSEPH COLUMBUS LAWSON Joseph Columbus Lawson, 71, of Hillsville, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at his home. Mr. Lawson was an All State Commander four consecutive years, American Commander for three years. He was also the past president of the Blue Ridge Country Club, and was also on the board of directors for the Blue Ridge Country Club, and Twin County Regional Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Lula Mabry Lawson of the home; his mother, Louise W. Lawson of Pulaski; a son, Gary W. Lawson of Hillsville; a brother and sister-in-law, Harry Kent and Linda Lawson of Valentines; a sister-in-law, Juanita Lawson of Richmond; and a grandson, Joseph F. Lawson of Hillsville. A funeral was held Tuesday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home with burial in the Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Hillsville VFW Post 1115. The Revs. Norman Goad and Wendell Horton officiated. CARL ERNEST McKENRY Carl Ernest Brown McKenry Jr., 72, of Coral Gables, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Houston, Texas. Survivors include his wife, Clare Colleran McKenry; two daughters, Mary Percival of Miami, Fla., and Carol Ardolino of Connecticut; two sons, Robert McKenry of Wilmington, Del., and Carl McKenry III, of Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home with burial in the Isaac Webb Cemetery, Carroll County. Dr. James DeBoe officiated. JULIA MAE SHOCKLEY Julia Mae Shockley, 93, of Woodlawn, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Waddell Nursing Home. She was the widow of Wise Shockley. She was born Nov. 2, 1907, in Carroll County to Cooper and Rhoda Robinson. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Lawrence Hylton of Woodlawn and Dixie and Roy Howard of Vinton; two sons, Jerry Bedsaul and Charlie Ballard Robinson, both of Galax; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Tuesday at Midway Heights Community Church with burial in the Felts Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Adams officiated.Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
