    2. Galax Gazette Obits--October 07, 2001 VELVA WINESETT COX Velva Winesett Cox, 92, of Galax, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Waddell Nursing Home. She was the widow of Arthur Clarence Cox. She was born in Alamogordo, N.Mex., to Alec and Mattie Felts Winesett. Survivors include six daughters and four sons-in-law, Loree and Ed Large of Hillsville, Dorothy and L.D. Davis of Galax, Sherry Harless of Cherry Valley, Calif., Virginia and Odie Bowers of Galax, Pat and Brad Hough of LaPine, Ore., and Betty Cox of Galax; five sons and daughters-in-law, Sonny and Sylvia Cox of Sweet Home, Ore., Bill and Shelby Cox of Galax, Jim and Joan Cox of Ennice, N.C., Clarence Lee and Barbara Cox of West Jefferson, N.C., and Arthur and Faye Cox of Galax; a sister, Betty Lou Payne of Mount Airy, N.C.; a brother, Franklin Pierce Winesett of San Andreas, Calif.; a half brother, Franklin D. Winesett of Mount Airy, N.C.; 33 grandchildren; and more than 65 great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Thursday at Snow Hill Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Revs. Ernie Smith and Eddie Beck officiated.Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ANNA BEACH GORDON Anna Beach Gordon, 91, of Woodlawn, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Birdmont Manor. She was the widow of Raymond Lee Gordon SR. She was born June 5, 1910, in Roanoke. Survivors include two sons, Raymond Lee Gordon Jr., of Mechanicsville and Captain Robert E. Gordon, retired U.S. Navy Chaplin of Independence; three half sisters, Elizabeth Sledd and Pauline Williams, both of Roanoke and Mildred Carroll of Salem; a half brother, Corbin L. Beach of Roanoke; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held today, Friday, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with burial in the Monta Vista Cemetery. Dr. Tom Conley will officiated.Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. JOYCE HELENE HALL Joyce Helene Hiatt, 67, of Galax, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at her home. She was born March 22, 1934, in New York, N.Y., to William and Ruth Haines Douer. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Roger D. Cockerham of Mount Airy, N.C., and Suzi and James A. Lawson of Galax; a son and daughter-in-law, John Richard "Ricky" Sankey and Christine Annas of Galax; six grandchildren, Ginny Cickerham, Eric Cockerham, Stella Lawson, Janisa Lawson, Lacey Lawson and Joyce Sankey; two great-grandchildren; one niece; one nephew; and a loving companion, David Quessenberry. A memorial service was held Thursday at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home with the Rev. James Fain officiating. OLA MARIE HAMM POOLE Ola Marie Hamm Poole, 86, of Rural Retreat, formerly of Flatridge, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion. She was the widow of Ernest Poole. She was born Sept. 8, 1915, in West Virginia to Emmitt and Ida Mae Parks Hamm. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Lena and Victor Bonham of Marion, Mary Lou and Kyle McGrady and Linda and Jimmy Umberger, all of Rural Retreat; a son, Rorry Poole of Flatridge; a sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Alan Townsend of Flatridge; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today, Friday, at 2 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with burial in the Honey Grove Cemetery, Flatridge. The Revs. Ted Bonham and Fred E. Jennings will officiate.
