Galax Gazette Obits, Wednesday, October 10, 2001 MARY SAUNDERS BRUCE Minister Mary Saunders Bruce, 59, of Pulaski, formerly of Carroll County, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. She was born in Carroll County on Aug. 24, 1942 to Willie Walter Saunders and Mourning Blair Saunders. Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille and Wade E. Hill of Norfolk, Iola and Weldon "Slim" Phipps of Galax; a brother, Frank R. Saunders of Texas; and several nieces and nephew and great-nieces and great-nephews. A funeral was held Tuesday at Mt. Zion Holiness Church with burial in the Bethany Church Cemetery. The Rev. Raymond Brown Jr. officiated. Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home officiated. CECIL JAMES DELP Cecil James Delp, 94, of Deerbrooke Road, Lenoir, N.C., and formerly of Galax died Friday, Oct. 5 at the Shaire Center Nursing Facility. He was born Dec. 12, 1906 in Beckley W.Va., to Eli Alexander Sr. and Pearlie Belle Patton Delp. In addition to his parents, he was preced in death by his spouse, Minnie Blanc Bartlett Delp; a son, Grayson McKinley Delp; four brothers, Horace, Ted, Eli Alexander Jr. and Victor Delp; four sisters, Mrs. Katherine Reed, Mrs. Myrtle Warrick, Mrs. Mabel Williams and Mrs. Bertha Ross; and a granddaughter, Mrs. Darlene Kral. He was retired from Vaughn Bassett Furniture Co. in Galax and was a member of the Methodist faith. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Joyce Delp of alax; one brother, Thomas Delp of Galax; three sisters, Mrs. Carmele Hill of Providence, R.I., Mrs. Hazel Yates of elk Creek; Mrs. Lavie Langford of Corbin, Ky., and Mrs. Lilly Patton of Galax; two grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and an aunt, Lilly Patton. A funeral was held Tuesday at Providence United Methodist Church in Fries.Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. RUBY LEE FARMER Ruby Lee Farmer, 82, of Fries, died Oct. 6, 2001 at Beverly Health Care/Blue Ridge. She was born in Wythe County on July 14, 1919 to Charlie Davidson and Bessie McMillion Davidson. Survivors include her husband, David Carlie Farmer of Fries; two daughters and a son-in-law, Delena Catron of Fries and Martha and John Ray of Mountain City, Tenn.; a sister, Sadie Bentley of Pulaski; a brother, Roy Davidson of Hillsville; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held Monday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Ray Bolen and the Rev. Gloria Rhudy officiated. Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. WILLIAM H. HENDERSON William H. "Bill" Henderson, 59, of Sparta, N.C., and formerly of Rugby died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was born July 21, 1942 at Rugby to Harry and Qualie Blevins Henderson. Survivors include his wife, Kay Henderson of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stacy and Christine Henderson of Sparta, N.C., and Terry and Georgia Henderson of Bassett; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Joey Haynes of Cana and Vicki and Phil Terrell of Round Rock, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Gearl D. and Anna Mae Henderson of Troutdale; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Anita and David McGrady of Troutdale and Linda and Jimmy Hollingsworth of Mouth of Wilson; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence with burial in the Corinth Cemetery in Rugby. The Rev. Reeves Jones, the rev. Dennis eller and the Rev. Rex Hall officiated. Military rites were conducted by the Grayson County VFW Post #7726. JULINA FRANCES DUNCAN HODGES Julina Frances Duncan Hodges, 88, of Galax, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, Md., of complications following hip surgery. She was visiting her daughter. She was born Jan. 11, 1913 to Issac and Mintoria Harris Duncan. Her earlier years were spent in Carroll County in the Lambsburg area. She spent her retired years enjoying her family and friends. She was a member of the Forest Oak Christian Church in Woodlawn and read her Bible every night. She loved doing word puzzles and keeping up on current event. She was the widow of Glenn Hodges. Survivors include three daughters, Grace Mabe and friend, Robert Well, of Bel Air, Md.; Imojean Manuel and husband Don of Galax; and Barbara Farmer and husband, Sidney, of Woodlawn; a brother, Warren R. Duncan and wife, Anita of Moorehead City, N.C; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Monday in at noon in the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Mt. Vale Cemetry. The Rev. Bobbie Burcham officiated. A private service was held at Evans Funeral Chapel in Forest Hills, Md. on Oct. 6.
