    1. [VACARROL] Nancy Denny Burcham, wife of Levi
    2. Ron Hall asked on Genforum Burcham: In reply to Carolyn Spence: Was Levi's wife Nancy Denny or Nancy Stoneman? I have her as a daughter of James Stoneman and Sarah Freeman. According to her marker in Carroll, she was born 1773, died in 1857. Ron, I've replied here on the Carroll list because Genforum thinks I have 2 accounts and has blocked me from replying to messages until they striaghten out my account. Also this answer may be useful to others who find the Denny-Stoneman controversy. John Alderman published in the Carroll County books that Levi Burcham's wife was Nancy Stoneman. However, the Stoneman family research proves that Levi Burcham's wife was not a Stoneman, as James Stoneman had no daughters in his Will who married a Burcham. There is a property sale in Surry County in 1812 for the land of William and Rebecca Hooper Denny, in which their daughter Nancy Burcham is named and Levi Burcham signed as a seller of this property. In the old Denney cemetery in Surry Co NC, there is a little gravestone for a Burcham infant, so I am told. I do have a copy of this land sale in which one of the Denny brothers purchased the portions of land from his brothers and sisters. The sisters could not legally own land at that time, so their husbands signed. This land sale is hard to find a copy of. I wrote to Raleigh NC Archives asking for a copy and they replied they did not have it. The courthouse in Dobson has the original deed book, but it is in such poor shape, it was taken from the shelf, so I was told. I found a copy by casually mentioning to a cousin here in NC that I wanted a copy of the deed, and lo and behold, she had a copy she shared with me ! She had gotton her copy from someone in California or out West. The post office must love genealogists ! Papers zip back and forth across the USA ! I've tried since to inform everyone about the deed and the reality that Nancy was a Denny. I think one or possibly more of her Denny brothers migrated to Crooked Creek with she and Levi. Hope this answers the question. I transcribed the deed and put it on the internet somewhere, but I have so many websites, I don't recall where I placed it.... UGH ! I have it in my FTM if someone wants a copy of the transcription. Carolyn Spence Grandaughter of a Burcham and a Stoneman......
