Galax Gazette Wednesday, September 05, 2001 Grover F. Cornett, 89, of Flatridge, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 201, at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wave Kiser Cornett. He was born Aug. 31, 1912, in Flatridge to Stuart Marvin and Malinda Long Cornett. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Frances and Harvey Spates of Orlando, Fla.; five sisters and a spouse, Mary Carriston of Elkton, Md., Lucia Cornett of White Hall, Md., Pearl Hash of Bel Air, Md., Lillie and Millard Parks of Galax and Ora Lee Andersonof Falls Church; six brothers and four spouses, Wayne and Edith Cornett of Speedwell, Estel and Velma Cornett, Carl and Margaret Cornett and Claude Cornett, all of Flatridge, Don and Jeanne Cornett of Elkton, Md., and Bill Cornett of Marion; three grandsons, Joseph Harvey Spates of Longwood, Fla., David William Spates of Kenosha, Wis., and Michael Fred Spates of Orlando, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Zachary, Matthew, Megan, Tiffany and Julia; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held today, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with burial in the Comers Rock Cemetery, Elk Creek. The Rev. Mike Porter will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elk Creek Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 130, Elk Creek, Va. 24326; or the charity of the donor’s choice. ========== Dorian Zahir Cox, 3, of Troutdale, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Wake Forest Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born Feb. 26, 1998, in Marion to Shane and Yolanda Cox Griffith. Survivors include her mother, Yolanda Griffith of Marion; her father, Shane Griffith of Elk Creek; a brother, De’Andre Griffith of Troutdale; her maternal grandparents, Mason and Evangeline Cox of Troutdale; her paternal grandmother, B.J. Griffith of Galax; her paternal great-grandparents, Roland and Betty Jo Sullivan of Elk Creek; her maternal great-grandmothers, Bertha Cox of Independence and the late Pauline Anderson of Smyth County; her paternal great-great-grandfather, Steve Phipps of Mouth of Wilson; and several aunts and uncles. A funeral will be held today, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with burial in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Elders Robert Wolfe and Pete Phipps will officiate. She was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Wythe County to Timothy A. Youngblood and Marion Wright Youngblood. Survivors include her husband, Richard G. Perry of Mount Airy, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ruth "Sissy" and Greg McCormick of Boone, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert "Bob" and Joyce Perry of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; a brother, Eldred "Hambone" Youngblood of Boone, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Youngblood of Umatilla, Fla., and Beulah Youngblood of Fries; one grandson; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and other loved ones. A funeral was held Sunday at Mount Hope United Methodist Church with burial in the Mount Hope Cemetery. The Rev. Rance Edwards officiated. She was the widow of Herman Clifton Williams. She was born June 2, 1911, in Union, W.Va., to Charles and Eula Bell Hale. Survivors include two stepsons and their wives, Johnny M. and Gail Williams and Ronnie G. and Geraldine Williams, all of Galax; a sister, Ruby Radford of West Virginia; two brothers, Vernon Hale of Charleston, W.Va., and Charles Hale Jr., of Roanoke; four stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Sunday at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home with burial in the Williams Family Cemetery. The Rev. Myron Dalton officiated. =========
