    3. Wow! Hello cousins! Finding more every day in Carroll Co! I will be there the last week in June. It will be the Spence family reunion on the last Saturday. Spences from Carroll Co., please contact me. Looking for Ennis Lee Spence descendants and descendants of siblings of Ennis (father was Eli Jackson Spence). I will be in Dugspur to do some cemetary research on the Daltons and Sutphin lines also earlier that week. I will stay in Damascus with my mom and dad. I will also be checking out courthouses for Washington, Carroll, Grayson and also in Sparta, NC. Sheila

    2. DELORES DAHLEEN
    3. Carroll Co. Researchers, Thank you all for your wonderful responses to my question on Hugh Hanks. How I missed not looking into the "Settlements" by John Perry Alderman to see if there was anything in it that might have helped me, I don't know----? But I still might not have connected that Jane's husband was Thomas. If this turns out to be the correct Hugh Hanks, that married Sarah Jane Puckett, daughter of Rev. Daniel Puckett, Quaker, in Kansas in 1875 - 1890's, my husband is also my cousin !!!!!!!! What fun. I am sure there is a connection because of the old tale's of the men visiting with Abe Lincoln, a cousin, around the potbelly stove, in an Illinois town store. And we all know how Abe like to tell stories and talk politics. I want to say "Thank You" one more time. Delores M. Keith Dahleen

    2. Hi Delores, Can't say what happened to Hugh Hanks, but his father was Thomas Hanks, (son of Joshua and Ruth Bryant Hanks) born 28OCT1797 in North Carolina; died 13FEB1840 in Grayson/Carroll and is buried in the old Quaker Cemetery. His mother was Jane Moore, also from NC but I can't identify her parents. She was born in 1799 and died in 1852 and is also buried in the Quaker Cemetery. They were married in Surry Co, NC in 1819. I have 8 children listed for them. best regards, Ron Hall

    3. There is an annotated 1850 Carroll County Census in the Roanoke Library that says Jane Hanks is the widow of Thomas Hanks (1797-1840), the son of Joshua and Ruth (Bryant) Hanks. Jane is Jane Moore (1799-1852) and married Thomas in 1819 in Surry Co., NC. The library is closed for repairs so I don't have the information handy on who annotated the census but hopefully someone else on the list knows.
