    1. Re: [VACARROL] Richard Beasley 1795/96 - 1881

    3. I have that Richard Beasley's parents were Benjamin Beasley, born Feb. 1760, died Apr. 24, 1841, and Catherine, born about 1775, died after 1850. An article by Ottie Padgett in The Galax Gazette, Aug. 28, 1975, said that Richard Beasley's mother, Catherine, was a full-blooded Cherokee. "Oral history says the Indian woman often treated the ill through her knowledge of herbs and other available medicines of the time." There is some confusion about Richard Beasley's father. Benjamin Beasley had a wife and family in Patrick Co. and I was told by Johnny Alderman that quite possibly Benjamin and Catherine did not marry. There is a Patrick Co. researcher who claims that Richard's father was not Benjamin but was Benjamin's brother. Benjamin Beasley was a veteran who stated on his 1832, Grayson County, Revolutionary War pension application that he was at Yorktown when the British surrendered and that he heard General Washington address the troops and that he also saw Pierre Lafayette. On his application, he listed his place of birth as King and Queen Co., VA, but apparently lived in Stokes Co., NC before returning to live in Virginia. His estate was settled in Patrick Co. According to an another article announcing a Beasley family reunion, "It appears that Richard Beasley, son of Benjamin and Catherine, came to the Snake Creek area of Carroll County about 1820 and married Sarah Hardy. Also it appears that Rachel Beasley, daughter of Benjamin and Catherine, came into the same area and married Sarah's brother Henry two years later. About 10 years later, Benjamin and Catherine migrated to the area also." I descend from Rachel Beasley and Henry J. Hardy, Sr. Their children were double first cousins to the children of Richard Beasley and Sarah Hardy. Another family connection is Richard and Sarah Beasley's daughter, Joannah Beasley, who married Michael Shockley, son of my great-great-great-grandparents, Esau Shockley and Elizabeth Farmer.
