    3. I had no idea that Thomas Gardner would have had a daughter that had lived until this week and am sorry to hear of her death. Thomas Gardner and my Great Grandfather Edward Rice Wall served during the Civil War together. Thomas signed Edward's pension application on the Oath of Resident Witness form, Sept. 24, 1910, stating that they had known each other for forty years in Carroll County Virginia. There is a notation at the top of the form. It is extremely difficult to read, but it either states that "He signed up infantry with me." or "He signed up Wytheco with me." I think it is the first, but can not be sure. Thomas and Edward were boys that I am sure became men far too quickly as Edward was only 13 or 14 and Thomas could not have been much older. The Gardner family has my condolences. Deronda Spiller

    1. Re: [VACARROL] Re: So sorry
    2. Let me add my thanks for publication of the sad news of this passing. I remember her well from back in the '50's when I was a boy. Mildred Emily Webb was the first wife of Thomas Gardner and she died 18DEC1878. Flora's mother was Elizabeth Banks (1858-1938) and she was married 27MAY1880 in Carroll. Her parents were Isaac Banks and Lucinda Webb. Thomas, though a bit young to have served in the war, was a drummer boy. Perhaps you will recall the drum in the Carroll News that was located and purchased by the Historical Society so it could be returned to Carroll. Andrew Washington Gardner, father of Thomas, was another unfortunate victim of the Carroll Home Guard. (most likely the Combs brothers, Church and Berry). 1. Re: [VACARROL] Henry Horton, Jr.
    2. Henry was alive as late as 1898 when the roster of surviving Confederates was taken. He turns up again on the 1909 Pension List, however, he is not listed in 1911 so (unless he got rich) he likely died sometime in there. I'm fairly certain he died in Carroll as I have a note written by my g-grandfather that he attended his funeral. His marker, unfortunately, being a confederate marker, does not reflect his vital statistics. I did not find that his widow remarried in Carroll. (She had previously been married to Aaron Floyd Goad.) I do know she and Henry had at least one child, a daughter named Luler F., born in 1891. 1. [VACARROL] SS Solution
    2. As you may or may not know, the SS Administration has announced that the price for requesting SS-5 forms is going from $7 to $27 in July! To help keep down costs, a reasercher on one of my lists suggested the following. I think it's a great idea and certainly easy enough to do! I have her permission to spread this around. Feel free to do likewise! > Fellow listers, > Here’s an appeal to all of you to pull out the copies of the SSAN > application forms you already have filed away in your "stuff" and post them > at Rootsweb. > I just did it for the ones I have and it’s really easy. :O) > 1. Go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/ > 2. Scroll down the home page to Social Security Death Index and click on it. > 3. Enter the name of the person who is on the form you have into the search > engine. > 4. When the right entry comes up, go over to the far right and click on "Add > Post-Em" link. > 5. The "Fill in the blank" form will come up and you can type in the > information just like it’s printed on the form you have in your hands! > 6. Include all the information in the order that it is entered on the form, > so that others have the advantage of all that information. NOTE: You don’t > have to type in the SS Number for the person as the Rootsweb program > includes it. > Since the cost of these forms will be increasing substantially next week, it > would be good if EVERYONE put out the information they already have. Then > whoever else is searching for that same person won’t be required to pay the > new price for the same form you have in your files. And vice-versa!
