The story is somewhat documented in the book, "The Man Who Moved A Mountain." However, if the story is like the rest of the book, it is a bit suspect. Speaking as one who researched the Allen Tragedy, I would like to see someone research this event and tell the straight story. Like the Allen story, it is probably distorted over time and many retellings and interpretations. In my experience, even descendants of the parties involved only have one side of the story; that which was told to them by their families. Doug, I haven't found information on Nancy's parents but I did find a possible mention of her in John Alderman's 1850 Census: Annotated: on page 2 under the Allen family it states "James (1827-1894) married Nancy Gilly in 1855." If this is the same James and Nancy then it looks like the marriage date that you have may actually be the date of death for James. James' parents are listed as Thomas and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) Allen. Researchers of the Hanks family lines that have not seen the book "THE HANKS FAMILY OF VIRGINIA AND WESTWARD" by Adin Baber printed in 1965, need to take a look at it. I have tried to get a copy of this book for years through inter-library loan and I finally did receive it. I don't think this book has had one day on the shelf of its library, it has been on the go so much. Documentation is shown on a lot of the lines, and of course more information has come to light since 1965. But I found it very informative. Delores M. Keith Dahleen
