I've spent the past 3 years compiling a database of all the people who lived in Carroll from about 1800 to the 1920's. Although I'm still adding to it, it now includes over 52,000 people. My goal is to donate it to the Carroll Genealogical Society where it can be added to (and corrected, I'm sure) to link all Carroll inhabitants together. I plan to make the donation after I retire next October. In the meantime, if you have information you would like to add to it, I would deeply appreciate receiving it. Or, if you need a lookup from what I have, just ask; I'm happy to oblige. If you ask about some ancestor and I have him/her in my database, I'll gladly send you what I have. I only ask that you contribute a generation to it (if you can) plus correct any misinformation that I have. However, don't be shy about asking if I have someone. Odds are, I've probably got something and I'll gladly check. Ron Hall

In the new revised and updated edition of "Cemetery Records of Carroll County, VA" by Suzanne Burow, I noticed Thomas Ogle and Elizabeth Robinson Ogle listed on page 183 as being buried in Hillsville North End Cemetery. In my line I have a Thomas Ogle b. 25 Jul 1721 d. 1803 married to Elizabeth Robeson. They had a daughter, Elizabeth b. 5 Mar 1761 d. 4 Mar 1829 married to William Jennings b. 16 Dec 1750 d. 15 Oct 1843. I also have some information that states "Thomas Ogle and his wife, Elizabeth, are believed to be buried in the large Ogle Cemetery on Peavine Ridge just outside of Hillsville." 1 - Does anyone know if my Thomas Ogle b 25 Jul 1721 is the same Thomas Ogle buried in the North End Cemetery? 2 - Does anyone know if the tombstones for Thomas and Elizabeth still exist in the North End Cemetery? 3 - Does anyone happen to have photos of the Ogle Tombstones? If interested in Thomas and Elizabeth, my data on them can be accessed at: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=spidlej&id=I5009 Thanks! ===== R. Sheila, If you ever find out the answer, I'd appreciate your sharing the information. The 1870 census shows Mary A. Dalton, age 32 living in the home of Emily Mabry. With her are her children, Roxina, age 7; James A, age 5; Lilly C., age 6 /12. Emily Mabry, age 34, was married to Alfred Mabry and had at least two children; William and Martin. I don't know what happened to Alfred, but I expect he died in the war. I have not found him in any unit records nor have I found his death record. Son William married Jane East Dalton and Martin married Mary Ellen Dalton. My suspicions are that Emily and Mary were sisters and were the daughters of Lewis and Lucinda (Brizendine) Dalton. If you check the 1850 census, women of that name and ages are living in Lewis's household. By 1860, Emily has married but Mary/Polly is still there but now with with two daughters. In 1880, Roxina (age 17) was listed as a servant in the home of Isaac Jennings and there is a James Alex (age 13) listed as a servant in the home of Reuben Dalton only a few households away. There is a marriage record for a Roxie Orlena Dalton, daughter of Polly Dalton, in 1918 to William C. Dalton. If anyone can provide any help, I'd appreciate being able to straighten out my records. I have found the Daltons very difficult to research. Shelia Parker <wmtwmn@yahoo.c To: VACARROL-L@rootsweb.com om> cc: (bcc: Ronald W. Just thought I would give this a shot. I have attempted to obtain information about great relatives who, at least according to their marriage license, were from Lambsburg. In speaking with a friend, she suggested that perhaps like so many folks here in and around Washington, DC who say they are from Washington, DC, but are actually from Arlington, VA or Ft. Washington, MD. Perhaps they were from some small hamlet near Lambsburg. That being said, here is the question. Were there any townships or hamlets, with a majority of mulatto's or recently freed African Americans near Lambsburg? Is there anyone who can assist me with this? The surnames I am looking for are COLES and CHEATHAM. Thanks Trish

I'm looking for the will of John Carroll, d. 1860. John was the member of the Virginia House of Delegates responsible for introducing the bill to create Carroll County, VA. John served in the VA House of Delegates for the session dates 1842-44, 1846-51, 1852-53 and 1855-56. His home was in Fairview community on Route 58 just east of Hillsville. I found some information that states "his will specified...that his body be buried in a Catholic cemetery in Wythe County." I'm hoping someone in Carroll County has access to his will and can tell me which cemetery in Wythe County he was buried in. I'm guessing that if he lived in Carroll but was buried in Wythe that there may be other family members buried there as well. Thanks for any help that you can give me. ===== R. Victoria Virginia Jones (1853-1918), daughter of Hugh Jones and Elizabeth Johnson, married John Leonard ca 1869. John Leonard died in Carroll Co. in 1872 "killed by a tree". Who was Victoria's second husband? The 1880 Carroll Co. census has Victory V. as the wife of William T. Jones. Informant at the death of Elizabeth (Johnson) Jones in 1886 was William A. Jones, son-in-law. Burow in "Cemetery Records of Carroll Co." lists Victory V. as the wife of W. I. Jones. Would appreciate any information on William --- Jones? What was his middle name? Who were his parents? .
