Ron Hall asked on Genforum Burcham: In reply to Carolyn Spence: Was Levi's wife Nancy Denny or Nancy Stoneman? I have her as a daughter of James Stoneman and Sarah Freeman. According to her marker in Carroll, she was born 1773, died in 1857. Ron, I've replied here on the Carroll list because Genforum thinks I have 2 accounts and has blocked me from replying to messages until they striaghten out my account. Also this answer may be useful to others who find the Denny-Stoneman controversy. John Alderman published in the Carroll County books that Levi Burcham's wife was Nancy Stoneman. However, the Stoneman family research proves that Levi Burcham's wife was not a Stoneman, as James Stoneman had no daughters in his Will who married a Burcham. There is a property sale in Surry County in 1812 for the land of William and Rebecca Hooper Denny, in which their daughter Nancy Burcham is named and Levi Burcham signed as a seller of this property. In the old Denney cemetery in Surry Co NC, there is a little gravestone for a Burcham infant, so I am told. I do have a copy of this land sale in which one of the Denny brothers purchased the portions of land from his brothers and sisters. The sisters could not legally own land at that time, so their husbands signed. This land sale is hard to find a copy of. I wrote to Raleigh NC Archives asking for a copy and they replied they did not have it. The courthouse in Dobson has the original deed book, but it is in such poor shape, it was taken from the shelf, so I was told. I found a copy by casually mentioning to a cousin here in NC that I wanted a copy of the deed, and lo and behold, she had a copy she shared with me ! She had gotton her copy from someone in California or out West. The post office must love genealogists ! Papers zip back and forth across the USA ! I've tried since to inform everyone about the deed and the reality that Nancy was a Denny. I think one or possibly more of her Denny brothers migrated to Crooked Creek with she and Levi. Hope this answers the question. I transcribed the deed and put it on the internet somewhere, but I have so many websites, I don't recall where I placed it.... UGH ! I have it in my FTM if someone wants a copy of the transcription. Carolyn Spence Grandaughter of a Burcham and a Stoneman......
I'm sorry, I haven't followed this discussion as closely as I might have and am not sure who William Hanks was. However, the Carroll Death Records show a William Hanks, son of John Hanks and Delilah Carrico being "killed when a team of horses ran away with him." However, the inaccuracies of the records make it difficult to ascertain a lot; the records show he died 10/9/1868, but I know there was a transcription error when the records were re-transcribed in the 1880's. Usually the deaths in this time period are a year off. Is this the same gentleman? (Wife was Sarah Powell Edwards.) Delores, I checked on http://members.aol.com/jweaver300/grayson (I hope it worked!). I clicked around on vaco-c and got a list of virginia confederate units by county for the counties that start with the letter "c". As for finding books about different units, I would start with the county historical/genealogical society of the county and state and ask them. You can also look at http://www.cwc.lsu.edu/civlink.htm for alot of things Civil War. Can any one tell me were this company was during 1864 - 1865 and what they were, infantry, medical, ect.? CO.F 3rd VA. Reg. This is for Alexander Marion Amburn, b.1847, Indiana, d.1905 Carroll Co. Va. Also this one Hanks, William Private; Co. E, 45 VA. Inf'y. 1863 - 1865. He died after he came home from an accident. About the only book I don't own of J.P Alderman's is his Civil War Book. Thank you all for any help you can give me. D. Dahleen
You are right about the thrill of retracing the steps of our ancestors. My GGGrandfather fought at Gettysburg with a regiment from Russell County Va. Several years ago I had the chance to visit that area and with a little pre-research and a lot of help from other researchers, I was able to find the area where he fought. It has been one of the highlights of my research into my family history. Gray Newman Charlotte NC
My ggrandfather, Alanson Farmer, served with Company G, 54th VA regiment, as did a lot of other Carroll Co. men. I had always been told by my dad that his grandfather fought at Chickamauga. What a thrill to visit Chickamauga a year ago and be able to trace every move those men made on the battlefield! Does anyone know of any sources on the 54th VA similar to the Alderman book on the 29th? Sharon Seaver

Susan, Thank you so much for the information. It looks like I need to see if I can obtain a copy of that book by John Perry Alderman. I thought my Andrew might be the one enlisted in 12/1861 to Co. F in Wise County, but the pension application his wife Catharine filled out, she put Co. H. So, now I'm wondering...lol. Anyway, I thank you very much for your efforts. Can someone provide a marriage look up for a Jeremiah "Jerry" Guinn / Gwynn married to Lucy? The marriage would likely have taken place between 1878 and 1880. I would like to know Lucy's maiden name and har parents names. Your help is greatly appreciated, David Hardy
Lori, I have my copy of the 29 VA Infantry by John Perry Alderman, 1989. I quickly read the book and did not find any mention to Liberty Hill. There are three Andrew Millers/A. Millers listed in the index. 1. Andrew Miller, Co. A, enlisted 2/26/62 in Russell; present 6/62. 2. Andrew Miller, Col F. enlisted 12/18/61 in Wise; present 1/62; on leave 2/62; present 4/62. The last one comes from the postwar rosters and there is some doubt as to if they were really a part of the Reg: 3. A. Miller; appears on postwar roster of Co. H. This regiment served in and around Carroll, Wise, the southwestern area of VA, into Ky, over to the area around Richmond and south of that, south to northeast NC, a little north of Richmond, around Five Forks--Warren and Merrick counties, Dinwittie and Amelia Counties. Other regiments where men from the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mts served: 4th VA and the 24th VA. There is lots on the muster records, Compiled Service Records, where other types of info are included in different types of records, stuff like that. It's an excellent book. Please add to this anyone else. Susan Susan Beamer wrote: > Lori, I have a copy of the history of the 29th VA Reg. I can look and see > what it says. Mr. Ron Hall, Thank you for your help. Actually someone else on the list responded to me saying there is a Liberty Hill community in Carroll Co. located in the Pine Creek Magisterial District off of Route 100 near Sylvatus. They said it's not a town and doesn't even have a post office, just a name given to a rural area. There were no Civil War battle fought there and it probably would not have been the site of a camp or training area. It's more than likely another Libery Hill in some other part of VA. There is a Liberty Hill Church in Grayson County, VA. So, I will search elsewhere, but I thank you again for your time and effort in trying to help me. Lori, Rootsweb has a US Town/County database that can be used to find a town within a certain state or all occurences of the town name throughout the US. I use it often to find out what county a town is located in. You can access it at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi It does show Liberty Hill in Carroll and Albemarle Counties. It provides links to the counties' web pages as well. Good luck! --- Lori Craiger <uni62corn@hotmail.com> wrote: > Mr. Ron Hall, > > Thank you for your help. I don't recall the price. The book lists all the cemeteries of Carroll County, locations and maps. Also if you visit the Historical Society, they have maps there too.
