I am looking for advice on the best places to start researching ancestors who lived in Caroline County in the mid-nineteenth century. My great-great-grandparents, John Mabile, an immigrant from France, and his wife Mary, an immigrant from Ireland, together with their sons John and Roland, appear in the 1850 Caroline County census. Mary and the two sons are in the 1860 Caroline County census. What are the best basic resources on Caroline County that I can use for research without traveling there? I do live within driving distance, but do not know when I will be able to take time off to go there. Can I get help from the county clerk's office, and are the records for 1850-1860 still preserved? Is the local library a good source? Is there a Caroline County genealogical society? Are there documents or microfilms that can be accessed at other locations? I would appreciate any help.
