As they watched the military jeeps and trucks passing by their home, they knew pretty soon they would have to live somewhere else. JOHN W TUCKER <my g-grandfather> purchased 298 acres from Frank Richerson's "Butler Plantation" in Caroline County. The house was built in 1820 by Edmerend Pendleton who also built "Edmonsbury" and "White Plains" near Sparta, Va. Later, my grandparents <JOHN HENRY TUCKER and FLORENCE ELLEN SELPH> purchased this property from John Henry's father, and more property adjoining this. They raised 8 children there... GLADYS ANNIE ... LEWIS WILLIAM ... RUTH MAE ... JOHN HENRY, JR ... RANDOLPH ... MILTOJN LEE ... CLARENCE THOMAS and HERBERT F. John Henry Tucker, born and raised in Caroline County, Va,, built the first "sweet potato houses" {1912}. Other farmers, as far away as Culpepper, Va., used these houses. Sweet potato's were stored and cured in these houses for aproximately 6 weeks. Stoves were used to keep a temperature of 70 degrees before they were then shipped to Wahington, D.C. where they were later shipped to the Safeway Grocery Stores. The Tucker family raised about 2,000 bushels of sweet potatoes every year. John Henry Tucker would hire 12-15 men for two weeks every year, to help dig sweet potatoes. His wife <Florence Ellen Selph> prepared and served three meals a day for the workers. During the winter, in the deep snows, is when the sweet potatoes would sell the best. Crops of tobacco, cucumbers and corn were also raised in large quantities. The Tucker's had four horses they used in the early years for farming of the land. It was only in the later years that they got tractors to do the work. Corn and wheat was taken to COOK'S MILL to be ground. I remember my mother <Gladys Annie Tucker> talking about what a treat it was to trade a few eggs for a bag of candy at an old store near the mill.. The old mill is still standing... The 8 Tucker children had to walk about 2 miles to catch the bus to Sparta school. The first car John Henry bought was a 4 door, 1935 chevrolet, which he bought for $999.00 from Blatt Chevrolet in Milford. That was alot of money then and he paid for it in cash. John Henry and Florence Ellen were good, honest people. Often John Henry would say, "my word is my bond", and alot of business deals were made with just a handshake. The Tucker's had alot of friends in Caroline County, and if anyone ever needed some help, everyone would pitch. I can magine how they felt while watching military jeeps and trucks passing by, for they knew it was the beginning of the government buying their land that they were so proud of and had worked so hard on... Now... they'd have to live somewhere else!!! HENRY SELF and FANNY JERDEN had 4 CHILDREN: 1> FLORENCE ELLEN SELPH {1889} married JOHN HENRY TUCKER {1893} <son of John W. Tucker> and they had 8 children: Gladys Annie Tucker <1915> =2E.. Lewis William Tucker {1917} ... Ruth Mae Tucker {1920} ... John Henry Tucker, Jr. {1922} ... Milton Lee {1926} ... Randolph Tucker {1928} ... Clarence Thomas {1930} ... Herbert Franklin {1933} 2> ZEILA SELPH married twice. 1st was CLAYTOR and they had a son John B. Claytor, Sr. <Richmond, Va> Her second was Perry R. Pugh <Fredericksburg, Va> and they had 2 daugters. Bertha Garwood and Dorothy Sullivan. 3> WILBERT SELPH married LOUISE RICHMOND and their children were Frank =2E.. William ... Caddler ... Clarena. 4> ADA SELPH married a CHENAULT and they had a son Lou. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ --WebTV-Mail-27996-5897-- --WebTV-Mail-7915-3571--
