    1. "memory maps"

    3. I have an incredible "memory map" from a male cousin/relative of a Caroline researcher whose ancestors lived on the farm next to my grandmother. (I got lucky). He drew a map of Brandywine from his pre-A.P. Hill memory. It is incredibly accurate based on official army and county maps I have seen and from what my aunt tells me are her recollections as a child. He has drawn in the names of all the surrounding farms, the rivers, the stores, the churches and whatever roads were there when he was a child. I was just thinking that in addition to the stories and details that our relatives are providing us, we should ask them to draw or direct us to draw a map of the area where they lived as they remember it. I have said any number of times - I wish I could "get into their heads" and see what they are seeing! My 84 year old relative says she can "see it so clearly in her mind." I did get her to draw a map of sorts. These would, of course, be just hand drawn and primitive. Maybe just markings of "my house, and the Farmer's house next door and there's the stream that ran between the two." If anyone who knows an elderly resident who could assist them in designing such a crude "memory map", of the area of their homeplace, it would be great to share. Everytime I went to the intersection at A.P. Hill to see the place where my gr grandfather's store and others were located, I'd get confused as to orientation and location of other buildings, etc. Now that I have this personal "memory map", It is truly as clear as a bell and it means sooo much more to me. Everyone talks about Naulakla and Upper Zion. I see the names of the general areas marked on the map but the relationship of people's homes is left to my imagination. I would really like to encourage people to ask older, living relatives who lived/are living in areas of Caroline that have significantly changed, to draw up one of these maps. I think it would be a great resource for us all. Linda
