    1. July 28 Caroline Chat record
    2. Hi everyone, Here's our chat record for tonight. We plan to have another one on Aug. 11, Wednesday, at 10:00 Eastern Time. I'll send out another reminder a few days before hand. Linda: Has everyone seen Kim Campbell's newest book on the Caroline Court Order records? Joann: No. Where did you get it? peg_price: Do you think it's worth it to add to our collection of references? Joann: I just bought a copy of Ed Broadus' new book. Although it doesn't contain any of my immediate lines, it's really a great research tool. Linda: Well, Ollie Clarke is good friends with Kim and she told me she had the book. Then I believe one of our "chatterboxes" posted all the new books she had seen about caroline. This one is available through Iberian press. peg_price: I've got a copy, too. Joann. He keeps getting more and more info to add to the book. Linda: Yes, I just Ed Broadus' book too. Peg, did you get the other two Broaddus books I sent you? Joann: Looks like we're going to have a small group tonight. Linda: I got two books about the Broaddus' from Jean Broaddus when I visited there last. Joann: Are the other two Broaddus books for sale? Linda: I had them in with my Garrett book and just hadn't looked at them lately. Linda: Well, does anyone have any "nuggets" to share? Joann: Do we have any questions for Bruce about A.P. Hill? Bruce: Is the author of the Garret book kin to the Garrets of John wilkes Booth fame? Yes, Linda, got your email. peg_price: Bruce, has anyone written a thorough history of AP Hill and published it? Linda: Well, there's the big question. They wrote their name and address on the front of the "home made" book, but no phone number and when I called information - no soap. Bruce: Not that I've seen Linda: The Garrett book is a bit confusing in the way the generations are numbered and there is not documentation. It was done in 1990. peg_price: I wonder why? You'd think maybe someone in one of the Caroline societies (Herb??) might have put something together? Are you thinking of writing one, bruce? Bruce: The Post opened about 1941.......my dad worked at the PX for awhile before he went in the USN Linda: Bruce, oh, I know now. You were a soldier on A.P. Hill Bruce: Yea......USAR, 1971 to 1991 Joann: Bruce has offered to join us when we schedule a tour of AP Hill. peg_price: you know Ken Clark then? Linda: Are you going to draw us a memory map? Linda: I do have some literature on the Fort that I got when I visited there 2 years ago - before I knew Ken. Bruce: we really need a resident......I never saw the place when it wasn't AP Hill......I was born in 1949. I've heard the name Ken Clark. Does he work at AP Hill? Joann: Wonder if AP Hill has a map of where all of the old homesteads were located. peg_price: Ken runs the tours of the base. He gave me a map listing the families that lived in the area Linda: I have a lot of A.P. Hill maps - but they're numbered and well, they're maps! Not like the little drawings of personal memories that I would like to see. Joann: Have you posted the map to the website, Peg? Bruce: not only is Joann the younger cuz, she can operate the pc! Linda: Peg, what did that map detail? Linda: Was it coded to numbers and the names listed on the side Bruce: Ray Campbell said a map of the old home sites exits, at Post HQ. Tnx, Peg! peg_price: No, I haven't posted anything about the maps because it's kinda what Ken has and gives out if you take the tour. There're probably the same ones Linda has, too. peg_price: Let me go look for them. Joann: Wonder if we can request one by mail. Linda: Ray is Kim's husband, right? Bruce: I've got plenty of GI topo maps of the place, but nothing old. Yea, Ray is Kims husband, and he is the clerk of court. Linda: There is also a compilation of Greenlawn that is supposedly older and maybe a little more inclusive than Herb Collins'. I believe Ollie Clarke said she was going to copy it for me. She is the one who sent me the Garrett book. Linda: Yep, so he's a great resource -Ray, that is Joann: Did you ever get a chance to ask Ollie when she will be able to respond to my letter? Joann: Where can we get the more inclusive compilation of Greenlawn? Bruce: I will see Ray in Sept at a clerks meeting and maybe I can get him and Kim on-line Linda: I call her from time to time. Email me the note you sent her and I'll relay it again. She is verrry busy and is due for some surgery. It's just a matter of time. Joann: That would be GREAT, Bruce. I'm sure Ray could add a lot to our group. Linda: I wish Herb Collins would get email. He probably figures we bug him to death. (I'd be one.) Bruce: Linda, you are in Caroline, right? Linda: I wish. I live in Baltimore - a mere 3 hours away - but it might as well be Thailand. Bruce: anybody on tonite in Caroline? Linda: Anybody have any relatives who died in WWII from Virginia? Joann: I'm in Upper Marlboro, MD (about 1 1/2 hours from Caroline). Linda: Bruce, where do you live? Joann: Not to my knowledge, Linda. My Dad served, but he was from Maryland. peg_price: I've not relatives who died in WWII that I know of right now. Bruce: my point being that a visit to Ray could prove beneficial.......I will be up there 8/12; I live in Ashland, 35 mi from Bowling Green. Linda: Anyone have any neat experiences to share? Linda: What could Ray do for us? Linda: by the way, the Garretts of John Wilkes Booth fame are having a reunion on Sunday in Richmond. Bruce: I have plenty of WWII vet relatives.......including my mom, but they all lived to tell about it. Ray is the clerk that keeps all of the records. Linda: The Lumpkins are having their reunion in September, there is a Chinault reunion coming up soon and we missed the Carter reunion. Joann: A couple of months ago, Bruce took me on a personal tour of AP Hill, Greenlawn and Round Oak Baptist Church. It was great! I learned so much and really felt like I was walking in the shoes of my grandparents. Bruce: Joann, is the Sale/Self reunion dead this year? Linda: A neat young lady named Sarah, sent me color copies of Wharton's Grove and there were some Lumpkins of King and Queen Co. p Joann: As far as I know, it is. Barbara Self told me that they were thinking about combining the Sale/Self reunion with the Thomas reunion in October. Bruce: Peg, do you get to the lower 48 much? Linda: Joann: Let me know about that Sale reunion. I met Cynthia Sale in Green lawn Cemetery in June. She would be interested, I'm sure. peg_price: Have any of you been to any of the reunions posted via the VAGen Project postings? I wonder how many people read those and how many folks are attending? Joann: I've been meaning to get in touch with Cynthia. You kindly sent me her address. I just haven't had a chance to do it yet. I'll keep you posted on the reunion. Bruce: Thats how I learned of the Sale reunion last year! peg_price: I get out about twice a yr. I was home in April seeing my family and visited Caroline with my mom. Delightful. Joann: Round Oak Baptist Church in Corbin is having their annual homecoming the end of August. Bruce: Maybe we should just plan our own reunion, with a tour of the post, etc. Joann: That sounds great! When will you be visiting Caroline again, Peg? Linda: I just received my gr grandmother and gr grandfather's death certificates in the mail this week. Joann: Were they from Caroline, Linda? Bruce: Yea, I will go to Round Oak if I can get my aunt of Barbara to go; Linda: On their marriage certificate, she listed her mother and father as James Garrett and Mary Carter. Linda: On the death certificate, the mother's maiden name is listed as Mary Wright. Joann: The only Wright I have in my line, Linda, is Hannah Wright who married Thomas Haynes in the 1700s. Bruce: Where were they from in caroline, Linda? Linda: I have been wanting to take the Michael Kaufman tour that starts in Ford's theater and follows Booth's trail to Caroline Linda: Brandywine Bruce: Do it.......it's great! peg_price: that sounds like a great tour, linda Joann: The Booth trail tour sounds like it would be right up your alley, Bruce. Linda: Bruce, - you've made the tour? peg_price: how long does it take? Linda: about 12 hours according to what he told me. Bruce: I've been all over Brandywine; beautiful area. Bruce: 12 hours is about right for the tour Linda: Did Mr. kauffman lead it? Linda: Did he take you to the place where the Garrett house was? Linda: and did you eat at the Port Royal Tavern? Bruce: you will see it all, from Fords all through MD, Mudds house.....ends up in the median of RT 301, on post, where Booth died, at the Garret house. Linda: How often do they offer these tours? Bruce: I can't remember who lead it, but I tried to do it for 2 years before I finally got a seat. Once a year Joann: What's the charge, Bruce? Linda: Hey, Bruce. Do you have any relatives in the Haynes-Hockaday Family Cemetery? peg_price: linda, a change of subject, but did anyone ever tell you about "binding"? Linda: Oh, thanks for reminding me. NO. Bruce: The Garret barn was where the SB lane of 301 is now. The house was in the median. Booth died on the porch. The price wasn't bad......I want to say $35, but that was 3 or 4 years ago, Bruce: Yea, Linda, about all of them are kin to me. Linda: you have to make reservations by calling the Surratt House, I think. Linda: Have you seen Herb Collins' third cemetery book? Joann: That's the one I sent to you, Bruce. Bruce: Thats a different tour.......I went through the Mudd society. Linda: I noticed some new Carneal postings on the webpage, too. Linda: Oh, the Mudd society - what's the address? Bruce: nope.......all gone. Been gone for years peg_price: I've got Herb's 3rd book and just ordered his Vital Statistics one. Linda: HOw did you order his vital statistics book? Bruce: I'll see if I can find it; I'm not a member, but a friend is. Linda: For some reason, I think I ordered it too - prepubliction price/ peg_price: Heritage Books is taking orders. Should be out in Sept. Linda: How much was it? peg_price: $29 Bruce: what kind of vital statistics......and what dates/ Joann: Now I remember. That's the one I posted to the mail list. Linda: The marriages were already done twice? peg_price: how old is Herb and how old is Dorman??? Linda: I have a picture of Herb in that 1968 Caroline Historical Society newletter and he looks to be in his 40's or so. Linda: Who is Dorman? peg_price: John Frederick Dorman Linda: What did he write? peg_price: He's been publishing the magazine *The Virginia Genealogist* for many years. peg_price: He lives in Falmouth. Linda: Oh, that Dorman (He,he) Bruce: Stafford Co, across the river from Fredericksburg Linda: Peg, could your mom do a "memory map" for us? Joann: Wonder if Ray Campbell could help us out with a "memory map." peg_price: In case someone reading our chat wants to subscribe, it costs $25 a yr. Send it to *The Virginia Genealogist" peg_price: Box 5860, Falmouth, VA 22403-5860 Bruce: Ray is about 40.......if that! Linda: Is that magazine different than the one that comes fromt he the Virginia Genealogical Society? peg_price: My mom lives in Locust Grove in Lake of the Woods. The area she lived in (Trices) was close to her relatives, the Bruces. peg_price: Yes, Linda. I think they're different ones. Bruce: But Ray will know some older folks who could help........ Linda: I had Whartons and Rouses that died in Locust Grove. Where exactly is that? peg_price: I could ask Mom about doing a memory map. Bruce: Peg, I thought locust grove was in Orange Co......?? Joann: We need to find some older people who would be willing to share. Linda: I don't mean to seem to be nagging, but I really think these maps will be the next best thing to sliced bread if we can share them and gather them together. Joann: ...but, I guess even the older people are too young to remember the area prior to AP Hill. Bruce: agree peg_price: Yes, it is in Orange Co. When we go down Rt. 17 (I think that's the number) towards Fredericksburg, we take the back road into Caroline and to visit the cemeteries. Bruce: My aunt is 81, and remembers Mica quite well.... peg_price: Linda, how about proposing this project to the 3 genealogy groups in Caroline? Joann: Wonder if she would be willing to help us out. peg_price: Bruce, my mom graduated from Mica. Bruce: Your aunt, also, Joann! Bruce: What year, Peg? Linda: I'm even getting my mother-in-law to do one of the farm where she lived as a girl. they keep talking about barn, roads, chicken houses, etc. I have a hard time trying to place it all. Soooo she drew me a little map!!! Joann: My Mom attended Mica as well. peg_price: around 1939 peg_price: who's your mom, joann? Linda: Wasn't there a picture in the Caroline Progress of a Mica graduation? Joann: How old is your Mom, Peg. I hope you don't mind my asking. peg_price: She's 78 yrs. young peg_price: which makes me 21 Bruce: My aunt would have graduated about 1937 Linda: Peg, which 3 genealogical groups do you mean? peg_price: who's your aunt, bruce? I can run these names by mom Joann: My Mom ran away to DC about 1930 when she was about 15. Her name was Alberta Thomas. That makes me about 17!!! peg_price: Bruce, I'm here to tell you, the 50's may well bring unto you more aches and pains than previous decades. peg_price: You and I had the same math teacher, joann. Joann: Amen! Bruce: Joann, aunt Louise didn't recognize your mom's name, so maybe a picture will help. Peg, my aunt is Louise Haynes of Guinea; sister of Julia, Buck and Carleton Bruce: and Cephas. Yea, here goes the memory.... peg_price: Linda, I was thinking of the Caro. Hist. Society, Port Royal, and the other Genealogy group that Herb attends in Bowling Green that we talked about last time. Linda: Does anyone remember someone posting about the surname HILL? I know i read it either on the web or the list and I wanted to tell them about the cemtery in Caroline. Joann: I doubt that Aunt Louise would remember my Mom, but she may remember her parents, Maggie Ellen Sale an Marion Noah Thomas. They died young, about 1917, during the influenza epidemic. However, Maggie's parents, George Washington Sale and Sirlina Heseltine Thomas, lived until the 1940s. She might remember them. peg_price: Joann and Bruce, I'll ask Mom about these folks when we next talk in a couple days. Linda: OK, I can do that. Bruce: Peg, your mom would be the same age as my uncle Cephas; he married Katherine Barlow of Bowling Green peg_price: OK, I'll ask her about him, too. Joann: You'll have a lot to talk about when you call your Mom, Peg. Give her our thanks for her help. peg_price: Linda, on the memory map idea. I think I understand what you mean. Just sit down with someone and ask them to tell where they grew up and describe the area and the people who lived nearby, etc.? We talked about the next chat being in 2 weeks and the chat ended after about 1 hour.
