Good evening, Listers! I just received Kim Campbell's newest publication of the Caroline Co court records for 1781-1799. Would you believe...the very last entry, made in December, 1799 under the category of "Overseers of the Poor" says: Overseers of the Poor do bind out Jane and Nelly Wharton orphans of Reuben Wharton What exactly does it mean to "bind out" someone? Does that mean they were assigned to work for some family or live with them? I am somewhat excited because I had figured that a woman named Jane Wharton, living in the household of my gr gr grandmother and listed as being a pauper, was born in 1790. This could very well be the same Jane, nine years old and an orphan. Any help would be appreciated. Linda
