The court exempted a few persons form the payment of tithes and working on the roads because they were either old or infirm. 1758--John Chandler, Benjamin Johnston, Samuel Johnston, William Clatterbuck 1761---Christopher Acuss, John Clatterbuck, John Lucas 1762 Decedent: Richard Clatterbuck Exec. or Admin: John Epperson, John Benson, Zachery Benson, Christopher Dudley Bastards--- Bastards were commonplace in colonial Caroline, although the punishment for a white woman, free or indentured, who bore an illegitimate child was 5 lashes at the whipping post, or a 50 shilling or 500lb. of tobacco fine. Few women had the money or tobacco to pay the fine and most of them were whipped. A list of white women who had bastards follows. All were whipped unless specifically stated otherwise. 1742--Mary Rankin, Agatha Marshall, William Clatterbuck paid the fine. Disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct in cases not heretofore reported: 1763--William Clatterbuck--bound to keep the peace. CAROLINE COUNTY COURT RECORDS: Massey, alias Clatterbuck vs. Clatterbuck, 1803 John Massey, alias John Clatterbuck, states that Richard Clatterbuck, decd., and Betty Massey afterwards Betty Clatterbuck cohabitated and lived together before their marriage and the he, John Massey (alias John Clatterbuck), is the unfortunate offspring of the unlawful connection. After their marriage, they had several children viz Reuben Clatterbuck who is administrator of Richard Clatterbuck's estate, Lucy Clatterbuck and Sally Clatterbuck. John Massey (Clutterbuck) further states that Richard Clatterbuck always acknowledged him as his son. 4 Aug 1803 Reuben Clatterbuck states that his father, Richard Clatterbuck, lived with his mother several years before their marriage and during that time had by her three children, viz John, Sally and yet another who is dead. They then married and had two children namely Reuben Clatterbuck and Lucy Clatterbuck. He admits that his father died years ago and that his mother is alive and had rendered all of her claim to the estate to Reuben Clatterbuck and Lucy Clatterbuck consideration of her being supported during her lifetime. 6 Mar 1804 A. Waugh, Rector of St. Mary's certifies that there are the following entries in the parish registry...." John-NS of Eliz. Ordered that the hands of George Turner, Darrell Turner, Hay Battaile, John T. Woodford, Mary Woodford, David Chives, Thomas Doggett, William Yound, Andrew Lawson, Mrs. Griffen, Richard Clatterbuck, William Miller, James Pittman, Thomas Alcock, Reuben Ware, James Taylor, Richard Taylor, John Pratt, Reuben Young, Reuben Clatterbuck and Charles Tankersley do open the said Road.
