Do you have any more detail? Because of the absents of good quality stone for carving grave stones in Virginia, there are few that exist for the early colonial period. The few that do exist were brought from England by the very rich. Remember also that there was a large Quaker influence in Caroline County and this sect did not believe in the use of grave stones. For most people, graves were tended by those living, flowers kept there most of the year [European influence] or an object placed on the grave [African influence]. Particular trees and flowering plants were placed on graves as markers. However as the next generation died, as people moved westward, the location of the older graves were forgotten, etc. Many times the last request of a family leaving an area was for someone staying behind to place flowers on particular graves.
