    3. Thanks to those who replied that the place in question was probably near the naval base. You're right, the Dahlgren base is in King George - I missed the county line on my map and thought it was still Stafford County. That is the Dahlgren I thought of too, but I wonder whether it existed under that name in 1864. There was an Admiral Dahlgren who served in the Civil War and I assume that the naval base is named for him, which would mean it probably was not called 'Dahlgren' until some time after the war. I don't know when the base was established. Perhaps it does date to the Civil War, though according to its web page, the current facility is only about 75 years old. However, given the state of military affairs in December of 1864, a naval base on the Potomac is pretty far north for a Virginia soldier to have been killed. Lee's army was besieged down at Richmond and Petersburg. Dahlgren would have been way behind the Union lines. Larry Dickerson
