Does anyone on the list know of a place called 'Dahlgren' in or near Caroline County that would have existed in 1864? I am trying to decipher an entry in "Caroline County, Virginia Bureau of Vital Statistics - Death Records 1853-1896" by Herbert R. Collins. An entry for John B. Stevens, son of Elijah and Lucy Stevens, states that John was "killed near Dahlgren" on December 10th, 1864. (page 74) My atlas shows a Dahlgren in extreme eastern Stafford County near the naval center on the Potomac. I presume that this place is named for Admiral Dahlgren of Civil War fame and was probably not even there in 1864. The only other places with Dahlgren in their name are Dahlgren Junction, just outside Fredericksburg on Hwy 218 and Dahlgren's Corner, where 631 and 632 meet in King and Queen County. I have no idea whether either of them existed in 1864. Was there a farm or an estate in Caroline County called 'Dahlgren?' Was there a military skirmish at a place called Dahlgren - perhaps somewhere near Petersburg or Richmond? I can not find any mention of one, though if it was a small affair it might not have made the books. The only Civil War event with Dahlgren in the name was the cavalry raid toward Richmond, though that was six months or more before December 10th. I would appreciate any help in figuring this out.
