Scott, COLONIAL CAROLINE by T.E. Campbell has the following,"Bridges for a time threatened the emergence of Roy's as Caroline's chief center of trade. Since settlers first came into the region to be the county, the rambunctious Mattapony had frequently flooded and severed all routes for transportation which lay across its course. In 1738 after the bridges at Guinney's, Downer's, Doguetown and Burk's had all washed away, the planters of St. Margaret's began to clamor for a bridte across the Pamunkey at Littlepage's to connect them with warehouses at Crutchfield's in lower Hanover and in the new town of Richmond." At another reference to Downer's it has (Woodford.) All these points you mention are in basically the northwest part of the county. This book also has a map of the trade routes. That's about all I could find. Hope it helps. Maybe someone else on the List could offer more info. ************************** ************************************ Just a gentle reminder: If you answer someone's question, it would be really wonderful to post your answer on the List so that everyone can read and benefit. All this information shows up in the Rootsweb archives for anyone and everyone to draw from. Thanks! peg
