I do not live in Caroline County Va. I am in Penna, but much of my research for one branch of my family is in Caroline County, so I have acquired material that I offer to help others with. I see in your comment that you have an interest in the surname Garrett. I do have this surname listed in this book, if you are interested. It reads: The Garrett family, of Caroline is sprung from ancestors who have been honored in many lands for many centuries. The family is of Teutonic origin, "Ger, the root name, meaning "firm spear". The family, or branch of it, came over to Britian with William the Conquerer, and the root "Ger" became "Gar". A number of this family were ennobled by the English kings and Queens from time to time and a coat of arms granted to them. Some of them became high church officals in the Church of England, and others became Quakers. A number of the members of this family went to Ireland and purchased the sequestered lands of the Irish Gentry after the conquest. Many of the Garretts, of England and Ireland bear noble titles to this day. The Caroline Garretts, of London, was one of the Charter members of the first Virginia Colony, and it is believed that he was one of the first Chairmen. The Garretts of Caroline have been, for the most part, planters, but several have held publi! c office, among them W.R.W. Garrett, Treasurer of the county , and C. W. Garrett, his son, postmaster at the county seat. Since it is written there were members of this family that were in the Virginia Colony I have enclosed the following: From: Early Virginia and its People by Bastow: A William Garret is shown on the list of first planters to the Virginia Colony. He was a bricklayer. He arrived in one of three ships on 4-26-1607, The Sarah Constant Captained by Christopher Newport, The Goodspeed Captained by Bartholemew Gosnold or the Discovery Captained by John Ratcliffe.
