Butler To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, September 12, 2005 7:50 PM Subject: [VACAROLI] Joseph Butler Family .. 1715 .. My ancestor, Joseph Butler, Sr., was born in VA abt 1715. His wife was Dolathy Unknown. This is what we are looking for, Dolathy's surname? They lived in, or near Golansville. Their children were: Elcie, Susanna, Anna, Mary, Ann, Jude, Sameul, Joseph, Jr. and Stephen. I am descended from Samuel Butler. The Joseph Butler, Sr. was involved with the Quaker Church there in Golansville. Later he bought 400 acres in Cumberland County, VA., but we don't think he ever lived there as he was always referred to as being of Caroline County, VA. Later, they moved to Halifax County, NC. My notes are as follows: * 1732 - Caroline County, VA .. Court Action .. 14 Dec 1732 .. Elias Toboy acknowledged his deeds of lease and release to Joseph Butler. Catherine the wife of Elias Toboy relinquished her dower to the land. * 1733 - Caroline County, VA .. In November 1733, John Cheadle purchased land from Thomas Carr in Caroline County. Since this was a brief record in the court order book there is no mention of how much land he bought. John Cheadle also purchased land in June 1741, and May 1750. In April 1739, John Cheadle bought land with David Terrell, John Hubbard, Joseph Butler and Nicholas Stone. It was probably this land on which the Golansville Meeting House was built, since all of the men were Quakers. On March 12, 1739, they held their opening service in their new meeting house at Golansville. John Cheadle had been instrumental in the building of the meeting house and had contributed £9.2.0 toward its cost. From: "Tidewater Virginia Families" ( Davis) .. [Note: Joseph Butler would have been 41 YO in 1739 if in fact he was born in 1698] * 1734 -Carolina County, VA .. Court Action .. 12 Sep 1734 .. George Whitton and Mary his wife acknowledge their deeds of lease and release to Joseph Buttler. * 1739 - Caroline County, VA .. Court Action .. Order Book page 531 .. 13 Apr 1739 .. William Terrel acknowledged his deed and livery of seizen of land indented to John Cheadle, David Terrel, Joseph Butler and Nicholas Stone. * 1739 - Caroline County, VA .. Quaker Records .. William Terrell, Jr. was fined at one time (1732) for not frequenting the parish house (church), .. "but there is no evidence that he became associated with the Society of Friends. It was on some of his land that the Golansville Meeting House was built, but the land was purchased for the Quakers by John Cheadle, Joseph Butler, David Terrell, John Hubbard and Nicholas Stone. William died before 1755, when a deed that he and Jacob Burruss had agreed upon, was executed. William was described as deceased, May 8, 1755. From: "Tidewater Virginia Families" ( Davis) * 1741 - Caroline County, VA .. Cedar Creek Meeting .. Golansville, VA .. Jul 12,1741.. Joseph Butler is dismissed from the Quaker Church. [Golansville is in the western part of Caroline County on US 1 about 3 miles north of the intersection of US 1 and VA 207 .(2002 ce)] * 1742 - Caroline County, VA .. Court Order .. [Note: This is the last reference we see to Joseph Butler in the order book. This entry indicates that he is possibly no longer living in Caroline County] In 1750, Joseph, Sr. 400 acres in Cumberland County, VA. In Caroline County in 1742 he was cited for being drunk. So, he was stillin Caroline. In 1760 Joseph, Sr. bought 300 acres in Halifax County, NC. Joseph, Sr. died in HAlifax County, Nc in 1762/63. His execs were his sons Joseph, Jr.and Stephen. They sold the 400 acres in Cumberland CO, VA. His widow Dolathy had lifetime rights ot the 300 acres in Halifax County. After Josspeh, Sr's. death, his sons Joseph, Jr, and Samuel moved tothe Gray's Creek community of Bladen County, now Cumberland, NC. In 1777, his 300 acre estate in Halifax County was sold to John Steptoe, Sr.. This indicates that his widow Dolathy has died. In fact, a later deed confirms that Joseph, Sr. and Dolathy are buried on the land. I need help in finding any data about Dolathy and/or the children when they were in Caroine County, VA. Thanks to all. Robert McLemore Butler ..
