    3. About the index, it is only as good as the folks that did it. Sometimes people got missed. Sometimes the names were hard to make out or they could not read them. In some cases in the 1860 I have seen names misspelled by the census taker and even people with different names........................Say for instance If someone was named John William Adams....................one year he may show up as John and another as William and with both common names to begin with this makes for a huge mess. However if you have searched the census page by page already, then unless you miss him........................he is just not there. You may in fact end up using this Military data to prove he was alive and well and have to skip the year 1860 altogether...................... Also try other sources to prove information about him. Try Tax lists and Wills and thing such as this. Even the old Ct. Minutes come in handy at times. Let's face it..................for what ever reason some of our People seemed to be hiding out when the census taker came to call. If all else fails I would try the surrounding Counties as well. He could have been living at the time, just over the line and ended up being counted in someone elses household in a surrounding County. Did in his military records it say what County he hailed from by any chance? I know that some records give a lot of detail and some of the Military records for the Civil War give very little at all. Who were they realted to by this point in time, try searching under that surname to bring up relatives then see if they were hidding out in their homes. Always note Using ancestry is good, but mistakes are made. That is why we always need to check the org. when possible. In your case you may have to use the Org. in order to locate them at all. Do you have them in 1850 and 1870? If so you may end up again as I said before just having to skip that one census for them and go on. I too have had to do this a few times. Good luck to you with this. You do have a hard one to solve here.
