I do not have the proof to show that he was a son of William Chewning, who was the son of William and Jeanette Chewning. He died in Louisa County about 1801. He had 3 known children who served in the Revolution, Hardin, Thomas and Richard Chewning. Possibly a Robert, Charles and Achilles Chewning also. Had a daughter named Philadelphia. His son Richard W. Chewning moved to South Carolina. There are several extra Chewning's in the area of Louisa/Caroline and Hanover County. Believe they are all connected to William and Jeanette. Jeanette had a will but it was lost in the destruction of Caroline County records. But she had 400 acres of land and I know from Tax records 100 acres went to George Chewning of Louisa, the land was in Louisa County, 100 acres to Joseph Chewnign also in Louisa, 100 acres of land went to John Chewning's heirs the last 100 acres is not mentioned in Tax record! s. It did not go to her son Samuel or William. The William Chewning who married Elizabeth Jane Major and lived in Culpeper is not the William Chewning son of William and Jeanette/Jenette. Several of the Chewning's moved to Green County as did my Smith's. Also Jeanette Chewning-Murrell moved to Barren County and died there. There were several Chewning's also in North and South Carolina who are possibly related to William Chewning and wife Jeanette Jacobus. Their son Rev. Bartholomew was in Anson County and remarried to an Edith in 1812. It is really hard to figure all the relationships of the early Chewning's as Hanover and Caroline are burned Counties. I have been collecting records of all Chewning's and placing them as I find proof. Not all children were always named in their parents wills, i have found this to be true in several cases. Estate and, Minute books, court records and Tax records will usually give a better list of off spring. There was also a record or two for a Samuel Chewning in King and Queen County, another burned county. A Frances Chewning there also. It is also possible that your Samuel was a son of my Samuel, as I mentioned before he was married at least twice may have had a daughter Jane who was suing for her share of his estate. It is trying to tie the pieces together, I need help :~) You can email me at TLuchetta@aol.com if you would like to compare more information.
