I have been reading your Chewning message boards with great interest. Samuel Chowning/Chewning of Caroline Co, Va. is also my Great grandfather. Samuel would be my fourth great grandfather. Mildred (Milly) Chewning, Samuel and Nancy Garrett's child, is described in one of the presentations done by the Woolfolk family. In Samuel's will, dated March 1816 he names his loving grandaughter, Milly Woolfolk. Also, 1816 is the death date for Samuel Chewning. I continue to believe Samuel Chewning went to South Carolina and re-married Mary Jackson in Cheraw District, along the Pedee River about 1780-1783. On the 1790 federal census in South Carolina, Samuel appears and a few lines above a George Chewning appears. This Samuel was born in Virginia and died in Baldwin County, Georgia in 1808. We have a copy of his will. Also, he was a revolutionary soldier and patriot of Virginia. He rec'd a land grant in South Carolina, one dated 1789. At the time he was discharged from the military he was in King and Queen's County, Virginia. The will of March, l816 would certainly be helpful, in which he mentions his grandaughter, Milly Woolfolk. We have some information on John Chewning, born about 1750, moved to Spotsylvania, Virginia. He and Lettice Payne had a son, William V. Chewning, born l790 in Spotsylvania, which would be a grandson to Samuel Chewning of Caroline. Hope to correspond with you. Sincerely, Lynn Chewning Metzger Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
