Hi: According to Ray S. Campbell the Clerk of Caroline Co., VA, those records of Caroline Co., VA that survived the burning were sent to the Library of Virginia in Richmond, VA. He has advised me that I should look there for the Caroline Co. records. Bernie in Virginia ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Hi, I'm sure that others will have more information than I have, but this is what I know -- many of the 17th, 18th and 19th records from Caroline and other counties in the area were destroyed by fire during the Civil War. I know that the Bowling Green Courthouse was burned, so depending upon the time frame of the records you seek, there may or may not be anything to find in Caroline. There are some records, however, in surrounding areas. I have found family wills in the Records office in Tappahannock, which is actually Essex County, but somehow my 18th century Caroline relatives' records were there -- perhaps a boundary line change? The Richmond library has many records, including Bibles, some wills, family histories, etc. And there is a Center for the surrounding area in Fredericksburg called the Heritage Center. It is staffed by volunteers, but has lots of wonderful records and the people there are very helpful. Be sure to check in advance by phone to make sure they are open. Good luck!!! Diane C.
