Author: tluchetta Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.caroline/154.5.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: That is the only birth record I have come across for a Samuel. But as I said there was a branch in Louisa County that has mostly been untraced. My Samuel Chewning had brothers George and Joseph who were in Louisa County but there was a William Chewning who died there about 1800 and another William Chewning in Caroline Co. 1809. I really believe he was the brother of my Samuel, the one in Louisa County. He had several sons in the Revolution, Richard, Hardin, and possibly Thomas and others. Richard W. Chewning his son moved to Sumter Co., South Carolina. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [VACAROLI] New website for Bakers with Virginia origins
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jg_russell Surnames: Baker Davenport Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.caroline/4088/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Pamunkey Bakers Association -- an informal group of any and all descendants of Thomas and Dorothy Davenport Baker of Colonial Virginia -- is proud to announce the launch of our new website: http://www.pamunkeybakers.com Complete with message board (requires registration), photo gallery (where folks can upload photographs, documents and records relating to the Pamunkey Bakers - also requires registration), research reports and a full database of Baker-Davenport descendants (corrections welcome!), the website offers a focus for research into the origins and scope of our branch of the Baker family. Association members lay claim to being Pamunkey Bakers through the marriage of Thomas Baker (c1711-c1777) to Dorothy Davenport (1716-c1790), whose grandfather Davis Davenport is well-documented as an early landowner in the Pamunkey Neck region of Virginia. Davis Davenport's lands adjoined those of an earlier Thomas Baker, and discovering whether and how that earlier Thomas is linked to our Thomas -- as grandfather, grand-uncle or other relative, perhaps -- is one of the purposes of the website. The website also hopes to trace our Baker family as it grew and spread out -- through Virginia, in Caroline, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, Botetourt and Montgomery Counties, among others; into North Carolina, in Burke, Wilkes, Buncombe, and Yancey Counties, among others; into South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama; and west into Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and more. So we particularly welcome all Bakers with Virginia roots, and hope you'll look to see if perhaps you connect to us (DNA testing is a great research tool!). Anyone out there descended from Josiah Baker, found in Caroline County c1710-c1750? Come visit, sit a spell, share a story, post a query, add your branch to the family tree. I am also looking for the Collison family in the same area along with the Jones. The info I have so far starts with Jkp Middlebrook, Hattie Jones, and Joseph Collison. I am trying to assemble the lineage of all three families. Any info help would be appreciated. I have so far been able to trace back to the Middlebrook family to the 1800's. Also, some of my family (Middlebrook) have said that Hattie Jones who would be my great grandmother was the 3rd cousin of John Wilkes Booth. I do not know if that is accurate but I need to be able to trace her lineage to validate that suggestion. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: llynnmetzger Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.caroline/154.4/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Tiffany Luchetta: Please note my new e-mail address. I have been reading your Chewning message boards with great interest. Samuel Chowning/Chewning of Caroline Co, Va. is also my Great grandfather. Samuel would be my fourth great grandfather. Mildred (Milly) Chewning, Samuel and Nancy Garrett's child, is described in one of the presentations done by the Woolfolk family. In Samuel's will, dated March 1816 he names his loving grandaughter, Milly Woolfolk. Also, 1816 is the death date for Samuel Chewning. I continue to believe Samuel Chewning went to South Carolina and re-married Mary Jackson in Cheraw District, along the Pedee River about 1780-1783. On the 1790 federal census in South Carolina, Samuel appears and a few lines above a George Chewning appears. This Samuel was born in Virginia and died in Baldwin County, Georgia in 1808. We have a copy of his will. Also, he was a revolutionary soldier and patriot of Virginia. He rec'd a land grant in South Carolina, one dated 1789. At the time he was discharged from the military he was in King and Queen's County, Virginia. The will of March, l816 would certainly be helpful, in which he mentions his grandaughter, Milly Woolfolk. We have some information on John Chewning, born about 1750, moved to Spotsylvania, Virginia. He and Lettice Payne had a son, William V. Chewning, born l790 in Spotsylvania, which would be a grandson to Samuel Chewning of Caroline. Hope to correspond with you. Author: tluchetta Surnames: Chewning Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.caroline/154.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Lynn It is very possible that your Samuel Chewning was from Louisa/Hanover County area. I do not have the proof to show that he was a son of William Chewning, who was the son of William and Jeanette Chewning. He died in Louisa County about 1801. He had 3 known children who served in the Revolution, Hardin, Thomas and Richard Chewning. Possibly a Robert, Charles and Achilles Chewning also. Had a daughter named Philadelphia. His son Richard W. Chewning moved to South Carolina. There are several extra Chewning's in the area of Louisa/Caroline and Hanover County. Believe they are all connected to William and Jeanette. Jeanette had a will but it was lost in the destruction of Caroline County records. But she had 400 acres of land and I know from Tax records 100 acres went to George Chewning of Louisa, the land was in Louisa County, 100 acres to Joseph Chewnign also in Louisa, 100 acres of land went to John Chewning's heirs the last 100 acres is not mentioned in Tax record! s. It did not go to her son Samuel or William. The William Chewning who married Elizabeth Jane Major and lived in Culpeper is not the William Chewning son of William and Jeanette/Jenette. Several of the Chewning's moved to Green County as did my Smith's. Also Jeanette Chewning-Murrell moved to Barren County and died there. There were several Chewning's also in North and South Carolina who are possibly related to William Chewning and wife Jeanette Jacobus. Their son Rev. Bartholomew was in Anson County and remarried to an Edith in 1812. It is really hard to figure all the relationships of the early Chewning's as Hanover and Caroline are burned Counties. I have been collecting records of all Chewning's and placing them as I find proof. Not all children were always named in their parents wills, i have found this to be true in several cases. Estate and, Minute books, court records and Tax records will usually give a better list of off spring. There was also a record or two for a Samuel Chewning in King and Queen County, another burned county. A Frances Chewning there also. It is also possible that your Samuel was a son of my Samuel, as I mentioned before he was married at least twice may have had a daughter Jane who was suing for her share of his estate. It is trying to tie the pieces together, I need help :~) You can email me at TLuchetta@aol.com if you would like to compare more information. Their children: William, Sarah "Sally", John, Frances, Garrett, Mildred, Lucy, (married John Smith), whom you mention. Also, Nancy Chewning. Samuel Chewning/Mary Jackson (of South Carolina)Married abt. 1783 in Cheraw District, S.C. along the Pedee River. Samuel went to S.C., from Virginia as a Revolutionary soldier, on a land grant. It seems as though he was one of the few Chowning/Chewning's that left Virginia, however there were a few that did to over into Green Co., Kentucky. Samuel and Mary had thirteen children listed as: Anna, Elijah, Nancy, Catque, Georgia "Mary", Sarah "Salley", Cathrine, Harriet, Susannah, Jane, John J. Chewning (born in 1804), just four years before Samuel Chewning, of Virginia died ( We have his will, date 1808 in Baldwin County, Georgia ) Could this be possible?
