    1. old query system will stay put
    2. Thanks to all who wrote back about getting rid of the old query system and just keeping GenConnect on the webpage. It's not a question of space, I just thought it would less confusing to only have GenConnect as our query system on the page. It's been a definite call to leave it there so that's what will happen. So, if you check out GenConnect for your surname, don't forget to go on down below that to the box of alphabet letters and see if someone posted a query about your ancestor in the old system. I have no idea if these emails are still working but hopefully the information will be helpful. Happy hunting, Peg

    1. Next chat scheduled for July 29
    2. Hello everyone, Our next chat is scheduled for July 29 at 10:00 EST. For anyone new who would like to know more about it, drop me an email and I'll fill ya in with all the details. Topics for discussion will be: Finding good places to research, Finding good places to write for information, Helpful people to contact, and maybe even Caroline Cemetery stories. And as usual, we'll go with the flow and may not discuss these topics at all. But we'll try..... :) There has also been a suggestion that we do a roll call again with everyone listing their email contact and the surnames they are researching. As this information rolls in, I'll keep track of it and try to compile a master list and then send it back out to the List. We're seeing in the chats that a lot of us are researching the same families and maybe we can do more swapping of info. With all the people on the Mailing List, we could have quite a resource of names. So, I'll go first with Peg Price at bearpaw@alaska.net researching Trice, Bruce, Wright, Brooks, and Lumpkin One final note: If someone posts a query, it would really be great to post the response to the List if you feel the information would be helpful and interesting. Keep in mind, everything we write in these messages gets archived by Rootsweb so if it's personal stuff, you might want to write privately. If you run across any interesting little tidbit of information or a new book or a new place you explored in Caroline, an upcoming family reunion, a Civil War re-enactment, a family newsletter you know about, a new surname url you've found etc. we'd love to hear about it. Thanks! peg

    1. GAYLE, WALDEN for Roll Call
    2. Hello Caroline CO Researchers: I am STILL researching John Walden born about 1730 or shortly before; died 1794 who was the owner of "Walden Towers." His daughter Joanna married John Gayle, born 1840; died 1825. John Gayle's second wife was Betsy Pitt. Other surnames associated with Walden are Gatewood, Munday, Hughes, Estes, Vawter, Taylor, Bowcock, Puller. Known surnames associated with Gayle are Freeman, Burruss, Robertson, Minor, Dillard, Sanford, Broadus. I am researching some of the children's spouses since information from the burned records is of course, not available and this method is useful in finding more data on the various families. WILL EXCHANGE DATA. Eldred Melton

    1. West, Peatross, Young, Burruss, Crutchfield
    2. Ben West
    3. Dear Researchers, I am seeking information regarding the ancestry, siblings, and descendants of Richard WEST of Caroline County, Virginia. A highly educated man of distinction, Richard was "bound and apprenticed" to learn under Master William PEATROSS. In addition to a wholesome education Richard served as a juror in Caroline County, Virginia between 1732 and 1745. What I am aware of further is that a Richard West passed away in 1772, leaving the following children orphaned. The children were subsequently adopted by some definite and by some assumed members of the family. I would greatly appreciate any information and would gladly expound upon what is written here for those interested: ORPHANED CHILDREN OF RICHARD WEST Ignatius West - Guardian - Samuel Burruss John West - Guardian - William Peatross Joseph West - Guardian - William Young Ann West - Guardian - William Young William West - Guardian - Charles West Alice West - Guardian - Charles West Benjamin M. West bmwest@usit.net Richard was also chosen by an orphan named James Crutchfield to be his guardian: - February 8, 1759 - James Crutchfield, orphan of William Crutchfield, was allowed to choose a guardian, and he made the choice of Richard West. Anderson Lipscomb was appointed guardian to Margaret, George, and Thomas Crutchfield. Cordially yours, Ben West bmwest@usit.net

    1. Mason Family of Caroline County
    2. Laurence E. Dickerson
    3. I am looking for information on the family of William Mason of Caroline County. On 2 February 1797, he married Sally Kelly. They had at least two daughters, though I know the name of only one. Sarah Mason was born c. 1801. She married James Dyson on 24 December 1821. The marriage bonds were guaranteed by Joseph R. Mason. Sarah and James had eight children: Charles T., Agnes A., James W., Richard F., Elizabeth J., Mary F., Maynard and Ellen Virginia. Both Sarah and James died about 1856, their estates being settled within a few weeks of one another. Sarah's father, William Mason, must have died prior to the date of her marriage and was probably dead before 1810 as neither the 1810 nor 1820 census list any males in the household of Sally Mason. Sarah was given in marriage by 'Guardian consent, Joel Mason.' I believe that Joel was William's brother. Joel married Jenny Kelly, presumably a sister of Sally, on 14 December 1798. Joel and Jenny probably had at least seven children, though I know the names of only three: 1) Joseph R. Mason, born c. 1800. Married Mary ----. Joseph died prior to 27 July 1860. Mary survived him. They had at least eight children: Joel (c. 1829); Virginia A. (c. 1831/32 m. 1 Richard F. Dyson, m. 2 James W. Dyson); Mary M. (c. May 1834/35); Winnie C. (c. 1836 m. John M. Whitlock 28 June 1853); Martha E. (July 1838 m. ---- Christian); Frances (c. 1841); Henrietta (c. 1846) and Joseph W. (c. 1849 m. Betty A. ----). 2) Eliza E. Mason (m. John Eubank 16 December 1822). No further information. 3) Jane K. Mason (m. Edmund West 10 December 1821). No further information. The estates of James Dyson and Sarah Mason Dyson were both administered by Warner M. Mason. He was probably a son of Joel and Jenny. Warner was born c. 1810. He may have married twice as his wife is named Mary A.F. Mason on the 1850 census and is called Sarah E. Mason in 1860. Warner had at least six children: Cornelia J. (c. 1835); Camillus A. (c. 1837, d. 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg/Antietam); Emuella C. (c. 1841); Francis M. (c. 1843, d. 1 November 1862 following his wounding at Sharpsburg/Antietam); Jane E. (c. 1843) and Mary A. (c. 1848). I have not found Warner on the 1870 census. I do not know if he was still living then or not. Richard Mason, b. c. 1799 and living at Central Point, Caroline County in 1860, may also have been a son of Joel and Jenny. His wife was named Nancy, and they had at least four children: Elizabeth (c. 1845); Robert A. (c. 1848); Genet (c. 1851) and Robert J. (c. 1853). William Mason and Joel Mason might have had another brother, Francis Mason, born c. 1774. He married Ellender Hammett. They settled in the Spartanburg District of South Caroline and had at least nine children: Sarah, Joel, Jesse, Mary, Elizabeth, James, Teareacy, Wilson and Lovina. Who were the parents of William Mason and Joel Mason? Was Francis their brother? What was the name of William's other daughter? What were the names of Joel's other children? I would be very grateful for any assistance which might shed some light on this line, or for information or assistance which may confirm or disprove any of my speculations about this line. 3. peg, does that mean all that invaluable, irreplaceable info will be gone forever? when we discover new families, the first place we -- well, me anyway -- go is to the query list. could it not be kept, but relegated to a title such as "former query list" or somesuch? just my thoughts. you can only do what you can do. graham tracking GRAHAM, GRIMES, KNIGHTON, HOLLIS, PICKETT in and around caroline co.

    1. Time to remove old query system?
    2. Hi everyone, I would like to remove the old query system on the Caroline page since GenConnect has been up and running on the page for about a year now. I'd appreciate feedback on whether it's time to do it or if I should leave it there for a while longer. I figure people who posted with the old system have at least been back once since then and hopefully reposted with GenConnect. I'd appreciate your thoughts on it. Thanks. peg

    1. Sarah W. Young Family
    2. Laurence E. Dickerson
    3. I am looking for information on the following Young family, listed on the Caroline County census of 1850: Young, Frances W. age 50 Young, Sarah W. age 22 Young, Paulina E. age 19 Young, Eliza J. age 16 Young, Joseph W. age 13 Young, Mary E. age 11 I presume that Frances was the mother, probably widowed. Sarah W. Young married my gg-grandfather, Isaac Lee Eubank, on 20 December 1852 in Caroline County. She died about 1856. They had no children. The 1850 census also lists a Margaret Ann Young, a separate entry, but on the same page as the above family. I believe she was an older sister of Sarah. Caroline County marriage records contain an entry for Ann Young and James Dyson dated 8 March 1853. Later court records and the 1860 census give James' wife's name as Margaret. Following Sarah's death, Isaac Lee Eubank married again, to James Dyson's sister, Ellen Virginia Dyson. Could the connection between Isaac and Virginia have been a mutual sister-in-law, Margaret Young Dyson? If anyone is familiar with this family and can verify or disprove any of my speculations, I would be most interested. Larry Dickerson

    1. suggestions on where to place new Broaddus book
    2. Hello, Does anyone have a suggestion as to where would be a good place to park a copy of Ed Broadus's new book on the Broadus/Broaddus families? He would like to donate a copy for Caroline researchers to use. Do you think many people would access it if it were in the Bowling Green Library? Or would the Rappahannock Library in Fredericksburg be a higher traffic genealogy site? I'll pass on your suggestions to Ed. Thanks! peg price

    3. Hi everyone and happy 4th! Thanks for the chat notes... Anne- noticed your working on Woolfolks- Would you have any info on the Af Amer Woolfolks of Caroline county? I'm specifically looking for info on Peter Henry Woolfolk. Not sure of his b date, but we assume it ws btwn 1800-1840. He died in Richmond ca 1899. PH Woolfolk and my g-grandfather OM Steward Sr were both born in Caroline and seem to have been best friends. They were involved in several bsns ventures together in Richmond. They founded and edited the VA Star newspaper together and my ggrandfather wrote a poem in eulogy for PHW which was published in the Peoples Advocate newspaper. Through some miraculous circumstances at the State Library I ws introduced to PHWs' ggdaughter and am trying to help her in her research. We also know that PHW ws a teacher with the Freedmans Bureau, but she has very sketchy personal info on him. Sorry this note is so long, just hoping you might have some info on Peter Henry that I could pass on to her. I'll be in Richmond nx week and I'd love to pass on any news u might have! Lynn
