Since there are several other Virginia books listed, I've attached a copy of the entire newsletter. If you haven't already, you really should check out the VA Historical society website (click below). Searchable database for many topics as well as photographs of groups, places families and individuals throughout VA.. Just a few names I saw that others on the list might be interested in: The Garnett House, (picture), the Woolfolk family Family ,the Pleasant family etc. There are reference books for Caroline county and I believe also pictures of Caroline cty locations.. There are also family papers for families all over the state. Can't recall offhand how much of it is specific to Caroline, but definitely worth a look, especially if you are searching other family lines in other parts of the state. NOTE: These items are simply indexed on the site. You can't download text or pictures, but at least u can verify whether info u need is at the Historical Society. 1. WYATT SCOTT COLEMAN and others - Caroline County, VA
    2. Charles L. Dibble
    3. In response to Peg Price's suggestion, I'm listing the names that I am working in Caroline County, Virginia. My g-grandfather, Thomas Barton WYATT 1846-1925, was born in Caroline County, a descendant of Rev. Haute WYATT's son John. TBW's WYATT line is outlined below (four generations) and is full of Caroline County names. If anyone can fill out some of the collateral lines, I would gladly exchange information. TBW's mother, Martha Frances SCOTT 1814-1847, was the daughter of Robert SCOTT 1768-after 1850 and Anne George COLEMAN 1783-after 1850. In addition to above surnames, I am looking into collateral lines and also more distant direct lines: CHILES ANDERSON ("Goldmine", Hanover Co. 3. Hi, Listers: I came across some old Caroline County Historical Society newsletters from 1969 and a Caroline County Historical guide book that was compiled by the Caroline County Jamestown Festival Observance Committee. It has pictures of all the historic homes and commercial adds that include phone numbers that start with a "3"! I've had it for quite awhile and would you believe there is no date. It has to be at least 30 years old. and so is the address - so before I post it, i guess I better check it out. If anyone is interested in this guidebook or newsletter, email me personally. I wonder if the society has archived copies of all previous newsletters. I bet that would make for interesting reading! Linda

The "Random Acts " site is one I stumbled across while surfing. Peg asked whether I thought we should do something similar for Caroline. I seem to only be able to get to VA once a year , so I would be particularly grateful! (: Peg also asked for my picks for resources for AfAm genealogy, so I included a couple of titles. Of course I'm always looking for more! 3. I just wanted to thank all of the wonderful folks who responded to my message with county Courthouse hours and tips on other local research resources. Just when I thought all of humanity was only as nice as a DC commuter on the Beltway, you show me this not the case where my ancestors came from! My father and I will be using the information you sent me as we take a closer look for family on the local levels! Thanks again! David E. 1. Caroline Welcome Center

    3. Listers of Caroline: I had another "bright idea" I thought I'd run by all. There are currently efforts to spruce up an area considered to be a tourist/welcome center for those who come to Caroline or to encourage more to visit the county which is really, in my opinion, steeped in great history and beautiful sites to see. I have always thought that maybe it was a well-kept "secret" shared by those fortunate enough to stop and stay awhile. I was thinking that part of the welcome/tourist center should display or provide information of a genealogical nature. - where to go - who to call - what to ask for There was an article in the Caroline Progress about the group that is in the process of developing the facility. What do you think? Is it worth a letter suggesting that the powers that be consider dealing with this angle as an additional attraction? Linda

    1. "memory maps"
    2. Linda Butt
    3. I have an incredible "memory map" from a male cousin/relative of a Caroline researcher whose ancestors lived on the farm next to my grandmother. (I got lucky). He drew a map of Brandywine from his pre-A.P. Hill memory. It is incredibly accurate based on official army and county maps I have seen and from what my aunt tells me are her recollections as a child. He has drawn in the names of all the surrounding farms, the rivers, the stores, the churches and whatever roads were there when he was a child. I was just thinking that in addition to the stories and details that our relatives are providing us, we should ask them to draw or direct us to draw a map of the area where they lived as they remember it. I have said any number of times - I wish I could "get into their heads" and see what they are seeing! My 84 year old relative says she can "see it so clearly in her mind." I did get her to draw a map of sorts. These would, of course, be just hand drawn and primitive. Maybe just markings of "my house, and the Farmer's house next door and there's the stream that ran between the two." If anyone who knows an elderly resident who could assist them in designing such a crude "memory map", of the area of their homeplace, it would be great to share. Everytime I went to the intersection at A.P. Hill to see the place where my gr grandfather's store and others were located, I'd get confused as to orientation and location of other buildings, etc. Now that I have this personal "memory map", It is truly as clear as a bell and it means sooo much more to me. Everyone talks about Naulakla and Upper Zion. I see the names of the general areas marked on the map but the relationship of people's homes is left to my imagination. I would really like to encourage people to ask older, living relatives who lived/are living in areas of Caroline that have significantly changed, to draw up one of these maps. I think it would be a great resource for us all. Linda
