Joann: I just bought a copy of Ed Broadus' new book. Although it doesn't contain any of my immediate lines, it's really a great research tool. Linda: Well, Ollie Clarke is good friends with Kim and she told me she had the book. Then I believe one of our "chatterboxes" posted all the new books she had seen about caroline. This one is available through Iberian press. peg_price: I've got a copy, too. Joann. He keeps getting more and more info to add to the book. Linda: Yes, I just Ed Broadus' book too. Bruce: Is the author of the Garret book kin to the Garrets of John wilkes Booth fame? Yes, Linda, got your email. peg_price: Bruce, has anyone written a thorough history of AP Hill and published it? Linda: Well, there's the big question. They wrote their name and address on the front of the "home made" book, but no phone number and when I called information - no soap. Bruce: Not that I've seen Linda: The Garrett book is a bit confusing in the way the generations are numbered and there is not documentation. It was done in 1990. peg_price: I wonder why? You'd think maybe someone in one of the Caroline societies (Herb??) might have put something together? Are you thinking of writing one, bruce? Bruce: The Post opened about 1941.......my dad worked at the PX for awhile before he went in the USN Linda: Bruce, oh, I know now. You were a soldier on A.P. Hill Bruce: Yea......USAR, 1971 to 1991 Joann: Bruce has offered to join us when we schedule a tour of AP Hill. peg_price: you know Ken Clark then? Linda: Are you going to draw us a memory map? Linda: I do have some literature on the Fort that I got when I visited there 2 years ago - before I knew Ken. Bruce: we really need a resident......I never saw the place when it wasn't AP Hill......I was born in 1949. I've heard the name Ken Clark. Does he work at AP Hill? Joann: Wonder if AP Hill has a map of where all of the old homesteads were located. peg_price: Ken runs the tours of the base. He gave me a map listing the families that lived in the area Linda: I have a lot of A.P. Hill maps - but they're numbered and well, they're maps! Not like the little drawings of personal memories that I would like to see. Joann: Have you posted the map to the website, Peg? Bruce: not only is Joann the younger cuz, she can operate the pc! Linda: Peg, what did that map detail? Linda: Was it coded to numbers and the names listed on the side Bruce: Ray Campbell said a map of the old home sites exits, at Post HQ. Bruce: I've got plenty of GI topo maps of the place, but nothing old. Yea, Ray is Kims husband, and he is the clerk of court. Linda: There is also a compilation of Greenlawn that is supposedly older and maybe a little more inclusive than Herb Collins'. I believe Ollie Clarke said she was going to copy it for me. She is the one who sent me the Garrett book. Linda: Yep, so he's a great resource -Ray, that is Joann: Did you ever get a chance to ask Ollie when she will be able to respond to my letter? My Dad served, but he was from Maryland. peg_price: I've not relatives who died in WWII that I know of right now. Bruce: my point being that a visit to Ray could prove beneficial.......I will be up there 8/12; I live in Ashland, 35 mi from Bowling Green. Linda: Anyone have any neat experiences to share? Linda: What could Ray do for us? Linda: by the way, the Garretts of John Wilkes Booth fame are having a reunion on Sunday in Richmond. Bruce: I have plenty of WWII vet relatives.......including my mom, but they all lived to tell about it. Ray is the clerk that keeps all of the records. Linda: The Lumpkins are having their reunion in September, there is a Chinault reunion coming up soon and we missed the Carter reunion. Joann: A couple of months ago, Bruce took me on a personal tour of AP Hill, Greenlawn and Round Oak Baptist Church. It was great! I learned so much and really felt like I was walking in the shoes of my grandparents. Bruce: Joann, is the Sale/Self reunion dead this year? Linda: A neat young lady named Sarah, sent me color copies of Wharton's Grove and there were some Lumpkins of King and Queen Co. p Joann: As far as I know, it is. Barbara Self told me that they were thinking about combining the Sale/Self reunion with the Thomas reunion in October. Bruce: Peg, do you get to the lower 48 much? Linda: Joann: Let me know about that Sale reunion. I met Cynthia Sale in Green lawn Cemetery in June. Linda: I just received my gr grandmother and gr grandfather's death certificates in the mail this week. Joann: Were they from Caroline, Linda? Bruce: Yea, I will go to Round Oak if I can get my aunt of Barbara to go; Linda: On their marriage certificate, she listed her mother and father as James Garrett and Mary Carter. Linda: On the death certificate, the mother's maiden name is listed as Mary Wright. Joann: The only Wright I have in my line, Linda, is Hannah Wright who married Thomas Haynes in the 1700s. Bruce: Where were they from in caroline, Linda? Linda: I have been wanting to take the Michael Kaufman tour that starts in Ford's theater and follows Booth's trail to Caroline Linda: Brandywine Bruce: Do it.......it's great! peg_price: that sounds like a great tour, linda Joann: The Booth trail tour sounds like it would be right up your alley, Bruce. Linda: Does anyone remember someone posting about the surname HILL? I know i read it either on the web or the list and I wanted to tell them about the cemtery in Caroline. Joann: I doubt that Aunt Louise would remember my Mom, but she may remember her parents, Maggie Ellen Sale an Marion Noah Thomas. They died young, about 1917, during the influenza epidemic. However, Maggie's parents, George Washington Sale and Sirlina Heseltine Thomas, lived until the 1940s. In checking records for traces of my Barlow family I found the following information in the Caroline County order book August 1783. The estate of John Mason left to Crosha (I believe spelling correct) Mason for her lifetime being divided among the following parties: (I assume she died intestate - this is not clear from the record) David Mason 1/9th share John Mason 1/9th share William Mason 1/9th share William Barlow & wife Mary 1/9th share John Sizer and wife Ruth 1/9th share James Gray and wife Flower 1/9th share William Faulcher and Susannah his wife 1/18th share Flower Martin and her guardians 1/18th share Nancy and Martha Oakes guardians 1/9th share Steven and Caty Oliver Mason's guardians 1/9th share. September 1783 - division recorded. This suggests a family group to me. Can anyone identify them as such? Good evening, Listers! I just received Kim Campbell's newest publication of the Caroline Co court records for 1781-1799. Would you believe...the very last entry, made in December, 1799 under the category of "Overseers of the Poor" says: Overseers of the Poor do bind out Jane and Nelly Wharton orphans of Reuben Wharton What exactly does it mean to "bind out" someone? Does that mean they were assigned to work for some family or live with them? I am somewhat excited because I had figured that a woman named Jane Wharton, living in the household of my gr gr grandmother and listed as being a pauper, was born in 1790. This could very well be the same Jane, nine years old and an orphan. Any help would be appreciated. Linda

In addition to the 3 cemeteries books, the Willow Bend catalog also has Colonial Caroline by Campbell, Caroline Co. Court records, 1742-1833 and marriages 1787-1810 by Wm. Lindsay Hopkins and Caroline Co., VA death records (1919-1994) taken from the Caroline Progress, a weekly newspaper published in Bowling Green, VA. This is from the most complete set of issues of this newspaper. Herbert Ridgeway Collins did this last book. "Inscriptions taken from the following cemeteries: Christian: Antioch; Baptists: Bethany, Bethel, Lebanon, Mt. Herman, Mt. Horeb, Providence, Round Oak, Salem; Methodists: Bethel, Bowling Green, Carmel, Concord, County Line, Mt. Vernon, Rehoboth, St. Paul's, Shiloh, Wright's Chapel; Episcopal: Grace, St. Margaret's, St. Peter's; Catholic: Sts. Cyril and Metlodious, St. Mary's; Others: Golansville Meeting House, Greenlawn, Lakewood." Vol. 2: Private Cemeteries has "inscriptions of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, taken from 125 private cemeteries." Vol. 3: Private Cemeteries covers "170 cemeteries of which a dozen or so fall into the bounds of present-day Spotsylvania County. Much of this area once belonged to Caroline County. Additional data for unmarked graves has been furnished. Corrections and additions to Vols. 1 & 2 are included." This description is from the Willow Bend Catalog. I do not have the books.

Peg, Herbert Ridgeway Collins has 3 volumes with inscriptions. Cemeteries of Caroline Co. Vol. 1, Public Cemeteries, pub. 1994 is $15.00. Vol. 2: Private Cemeteries, pub. 1995, $15.00 and Vol. 3: Private Cemeteries, pub. 1998 and $20.00. The Library of Virginia has them and you can get them from Willow Bend Books 800-876-6103.
